Peanut Allergy - Omaha, NE

My son is nearly 2 years old and attends daycare. We are required to bring a snack for his group (kids are 18-30 months old), but one of the children has a peanut allergy. I've gathered some information about what to avoid based on the ingredient list, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest peanut-free, toddler appropriate snacks??

What can I do next?

My son has a severe peanut allergy also. I want to say thank you thank you thank you for thinking of kids like him and being concerned about what they can eat. For your situation I would recommend the following brands and read the ingredient statements including looking for any warnings about being processed on shared equipment with peanuts/nuts, etc. These companies do the best about labelling for all possible cross contact: Pepperidge Farm, Kellogg's, General Mills, Frito Lay. Nabisco and Kraft also label for cross contact but do not include a warning statement - it is simply listed as an ingredient even if the actual food recipe does not include peanut/nut or other allergens.

I have a list of all the safe foods my son can eat that they keep at his preschool and only serve from. If you would like a copy, I can email it to you if you let me know.

Best of luck and thanks again for your concern!!!!

I would say to be careful using different brands, I've noticed the Rice Krispies say nothing about peanuts while the Great Value brand Crisp Rice says manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts. So even if it's the same food check ingredients from every brand. Also be careful about animal crackers. My three year old is also allergic to peanuts and he loves Cheez-it crackers, club crackers and cheese slices, Sun chips and fruit snacks.

My 2 1/2 year old is allergic to peanuts as well. My best advice would be to read all the labels! Even if things are generally safe, you can never tell if something was processed with peanuts unless you read the label! Some ideas for snacks are: string cheese, cheese and crackers (and turkey or ham slices), fresh fruit, fruit snacks and fruit rollups (check labels), Yogos, goldfish crackers, popcorn, animal crackers, fruit leather, Rice Krispy Treats (homemade), homemade muffins are also a good choice-- check your recipe with the allergic child's parents. Good luck!

there are many other options. I have a nephew who is very allergic to nuts. He eats tootsie rolls, lots of fruit, chips, he was advised to stay away from plain M&M's becuase that is a BIG risk, due to the p'nut M&M's being manufactured in the same area. Stay away from Keebler snaks as well, I would say 90% of the time those have warnings.

I can't say that I have any of the children in our perschool that have a nut allergy, but I did want to share a few ideas with you that the kids love.
Yogert (the Trix kind was really popular) with a few crackers. String cheese, crackers with meat and cheese, and fruit is always a hit! If you mix up grapes, bananas, and strawberries. They are sure to love them!!
