If you are diagnosed with PCOS, have you had a hard time losing weight? What have you found works best for losing weight after being diagnosed with PCOS? And has losing weight helped your fertility issues, if you are trying to get pregnant?

What can I do next?

Hi K.,
I was diagnosed(sp?) with PCOS about a year before I go married. I was told there was a very good chance I would never have kids. With that said, Mason is 3.8yrs (concieved throught relations) and Brayden is 7 months (concieved through IUI). I did loose weight before getting pregnant with both kids. I was on a diabetic diet as PCOS has a connection to diabeties. I continued the diet through both pregnancies and after. I lost about 70lbs doing this. I also worked with a fertility specialiest. I needed a large amout of progesterone to sustain the pregnancy. I was watched very closely. I had bloodwork done everyother day to see the what my hormone levels were. I had internal ultrasounds to see when I was ovulating. It sounds horrible, but I have 2 great sons. Don't give up hope. Find the specialist to help you.
Good luck

Remove absolutely all sugar from your diet, do not use fake sugars either. Limit the high sugary fruits, avoid most sugary juices. Limit your caloric intake. The only two sweeteners you can use a little of is the xylitol and stevia.
Exercise daily, metformin may help. Finding a natural progesterone cream may also be beneficial. Stay away from any estrogen mimicking foods, like soy milk. Any soy has estrogen mimicking qualities in it. Cook your own food stay far away from processed flour and grains in general, unless in small amounts.

Ha! Funny u should ask, I went to an endocrinologist for a thyroid problem that just started about 2 yrs. ago. I am on synthroid for my thyroid & I talked to him about not being to get naturally pregnant even after doing 2 cycles of IVF & surprise I am now 19 wks pregnant, he has me on metformin for pcos, I take it 3 times a day & I only have gained 8 lbs so far thru out my preg. Before I got preg when he had 1st started me on the med the weight was nicely coming off so I want to say he has been a godsend in more ways then 1!

I was diagnosed about 8 yrs ago w/ PCOS. Right after we were married, we conceived our older daughter w/in months. Then after she was born, I gained a lot of weight. When she hit a certain age, we decided we were going to try for another one. However, after almost 2 years of taking temps and calendars and all fertility testers, I decided I needed to go see some one. It was confirmed by my dr that I did, in fact, have PCOS and was then suggested that I needed to treat myself as a diabetic. I switched all breads/pastas to whole grains instead of white and 'enriched', cut out all candy and other 'munchies', found that dark green leafs were my best friend, and started walking 4-6 miles a day. It took me forever, but I did manage to take 20 lbs off after about 4 months. Finally, when our oldest was well over 3 yrs, we found out we were pregnant again--on our own--with identical twins! There is hope!!! Praying for you!

I have no good ideas about the weight loss, dealing with it myself. I had to have help medically to conceive. I was put on Actos (like Metformin) for the insullin resistance and that helped me ovulate, but it wasn't enough. We did insemination and injectibles and I conceived my twins. Just wanted you to know that there is hope when having PCOS and conceiving.

I've had PCOS for years and wasn't diagnosed with it until 3.5 years ago. I have been heavy since I went off birth control to conceive 9 years ago. It took about 6 years to conceive.

Two things happened to conceive. I joined Slim 4 Life (a company that uses a dumbed down version of the South Beach diet) and lost 25 pounds. I then took Metformin ( a diabetic pill) prescribed by my OB as a last chance way to conceive. I believe losing the weight right before I conceived with the Met is what caused me to conceive so quickly (one month later). With my second pregnancy, I took the Met for several months before conception. I had gained some of the original weight back from the 25 and didn't lose any right before the second pregnancy.

I do struggle with weight loss. I am presently breastfeeding my 2nd baby (7 weeks old) and taking Met to curb the sugar cravings. I don't plan on trying to lose weight again until I stop BF and go back on the pill in a year.

Good luck to you!!!! PCOS sucks!

My daughter (age 15) has PCOS and insulin resistance, which makes it extremely difficult for her to loose weight. She has been prescribed metformin and needs to exercise daily. We go to the gym 3 times a week, this has helped her to loose a few pounds.
