What is a reasonable amount to pay a family member to keep your child for 4 hours per day during the week?

What can I do next?

I think it depends on what's happening with the relative and who's idea it is. If this is a Grandmother and she really wants this, then I would offer her 1/2 of the going rate. BUT, that's only if they are already retired. If it's a stay at home Aunt that already has their finances in order, and it's HER idea, then I would also offer 1/2 the going rate. BUT, if this person has to revise their own schedule to help you, or may be turning away a job because of it, or it's NOT their idea, then offer them the same you would anyone else. I would suggest between 15 and 25 per day.

You should definitely OFFER the going rate. I would start out with the "I know you are family, but I wanted to offer you what I would pay someone else which seems to be..... for similar services".

I agree with all the other posters about figuring out the details before you decide on a rate. All that stuff makes a difference.

The BENEFIT to your child is they are with family. NOT that you are getting a reduced rate.

That's how I see it.

Family gets tricky. If something happens and it blows up you can't just find another family member at the same time you find another sitter. I would go above and beyond to have family look after my kid. Like I said, the benefit is that they are with Auntie Jane (or whoever) instead of with someone who they have to get to know.

My sister pays my other sister $150 a week for 6 hours 4 days a week. They have a weekly minimum of $100 whether the child goes or not. Also, the most important thing, is they have a contract between the two of them. I know you may think family and you don't need one, but it really helped them.

I would think they would hope to get the going rate, and you would hope to get exceptional care of your child above what you would expect from a non-family member!

How old is your child? Will they be feeding him/her? Or will you supply the food? I pay $25 per day for 9 hours at a licensed daycare and she feeds him bfast, lunch and 2 snacks. I would think $15 per day would be plenty, but I am in WA not TX and I don't know what the average is in your area for daycare. What does the family member think? Did they offer to watch your child? Did you ask them for daycare help?

In the Flower Mound LewisVille area I would call around to the local child care centers and ask for full time rates for a child then divide it up. For instance if it'a $100 a week for 5 days I would divide that by 5 and get $20 then divide that by half for half time. But if it's going to be any more than 4 hours hat day I would pay for full time.

The same as you would pay anyone else -- the going rate. I'm not sure what that might be -- I paid my in-home babysitter $12/hour.

Depends on a lot. At their house or yours? Are they far away or near? Are they picking up and dropping off or are you? I would say between $25-$30 per day so $125-$150/week.
