Pay for a Mother's Helper?

I am thinking of having my neighbor's granddaughter come over and play with my 2 year old son in the backyard and basically just keep him occupied while I do things like clean the bathrooms. She is 12 (I think) and wants to start earning some money and it would help me out too! Does anyone know what the going rate is for something like this? I would be home, she would be his entertainment.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks everyone! She is going to start coming over soon, and I will have clean bathrooms once again! :)

My daughter needed hours for Girl Scouts so at one neighbors she was not paid but used those volunteer hours towards her GS goal. She is also 12.
At another neighbors she was given a $5 or coming over and helping no matter how long she stayed. She was never there more than maybe 2 hours. If the parents are not home she is paid about $5-$7 an hour.

Since you are home I would offer $3-$4 per hour. If you ever ask her to sit while you go run errands I would pay her $5 per hour.

I think $5 an hr. is fair as long as she is only entertaining your 2 yr. old.

I did have a mother's helper last summer and considering it again for this year. I paid her $5.00 an hour, she was 12. She mostly kept my daughter entertained and fed her lunch. She also helped do little things too(loaded the dishes into dishwasher, etc) and kept the toys picked up. I was home most of the time, unless I quickly ran to the post office or something, but never gone for more than 20 mins.

I really liked it because it gave me free time and also helped me start to feel more comfortable about considering having her while we were out. :-)
Good luck.

I'd think that about half the rate of a 'real' babysitter or daycare (since I assume you'll be responsible for HER safety, snacks, etc).

Just make sure you have ALL expectations discussed with her and her mother AND AGREED UPON BEFORE any actual services are rendered or paid for. Never assume anything and never expect more than was agreed upon without first discussing it.

Good luck. 12 yr old girls are WONDERFUL entertainers and 'occupiers' for little ones!

I think around $5 an hour is the going rate. I know my daughter would do it for $3. As another poster mentioned, my daughter did it for free as part of a requirement for a girl scout badge.
