Parts of Yourself You Would like to Change...

I know we all have parts of ourselves we would like to improve on....I do not mean physical things like wanting thicker hair or to shed a few pounds. Rather, I am talking about more internal, characteristic traits. I generally am pretty happy with myself. But the one thing that really bothers me is how I am prone to negative thinking, and to absorbing too deeply sad or anxiety- provoking events. Just recently, someone told me about two very tragic deaths, and I completely turned inwards, which is so egocentric, and began to worry that the same thing could happen to me. Admittedly, I was pretty worried about diseases from a very young age, so no doubt this kind of anxiety is hard-wired....but even so, sometimes I just get so fed up with myself for choosing to respond internally to such news. What about being a more positive person, turning to faith, not drowning in every piece of dramatic news I hear. Certainly, I want to be a positive role model for my children and eventually teach them that yes, bad and sad things do happen in this world, and we can and should feel upset and empathic for those who suffer, but it does not mean those same things will happen to us, etc etc.

So, I guess that is the part of myself I would love to work on...oh, and one more thing....not being so grumpy and impatient with my kids even though I am 36 weeks pregnant!!! Just because I am uncomfortable and wanting this baby out already, does not give me the right to snap at my kids or hubby. I am just a total grouch these days!

What can I do next?

I do this sort of self improvement yearly with a chinese new year's resolution-

one year, i decided to voice the compliments that I was thinking. why not boost someone's day, by telling them they look good, if I was genuinely thinking that anyway.

another year, I decided not to grumble about the weather, made for some quiet rides in the elevator.

this year i will look harder to find the joy/ wonderment. I've already started. there was someone proselytizing on my morning commute - rather than being annoyed that my comparative quiet was bothered, I marvelled at the length and breadth of what this person had committed to rote memorization. rather than feeling pulled in all directions, when my land line, cell phone, door bell and fire alarm are all going off in quick succession, I marvelled at how needed I am all at once, and remembered I can choose priorities (fire alarm), and allow voicemail to do its work.

Best,
F. B.

I'm missing that thing that adults usually have that allows them to get up and go and do without being hounded.

Yeah, I don't have that. Dishes in the sink need washing...eh, look a the baby being cute.
Hubby's running out of underpants...eh, let's check Facebook.

Could do with a little injection of "happy 50's homemaker". Just a little one.

An overall goal of mine is to remember to be present and live in the moment at all times.
Too often, life's like a race to the weekend and I'm pretty sure Monday thru Thursday have some value, great moments, happiness, etc.
I find myself wanting to stop the thoughts of "O. day XYZ" or "I'll ABC tomorrow" or "first chance I get, I'll do XYZ."
I guess I want to carpe diem...more. Live in the here & now.

I'm working on meditating every morning. I'm also trying to play more music. I'm going to listen to some of my favorite albums a few times a week, and I am going to mess around with the guitar, flutes, and piano on a more regular basis. I'm also doing a meditation jar of positive mommy thoughts.

This year I AM JOY. A blog I was reading talked about picking a sentence to capture what you want out of life this year. That's my sentence. So everything else is feeding it.....I love music, and in the last few years I've moved away from it, so I really want to infuse my life with music again ;-)

I would want to speak life and truth to everyone I know and meet instead of being snippy at times. Sometimes I can't believe what I say.

I over-think everything and tend to ponder over the bad things that "can" happen, or if I don't do such and such, this horrible thing will happen. I get my psyche worked into such a lather I can barely see the light of day at times. I also worry too much (I hope) about the happiness of my children. I guess I just don't let my brain relax and just let what will be to be.
