Hello! I have a 5 year old who was just diagnosed with Partial Seizures (Silent Seizures) and also Dysgraphia. Just wondering if there is anyone else out there that is going through the same thing. My son is having a hard time in school learning because of this and I had him tested to see if he qualifies for Special Ed but he does not. I spoke with the Vice Principal today and we are going to have an ARD Meeting at the end of the month. The Vice Principal told me to bring any kind of documentation that I have from the dr so that he can qualify for help either under a 504 Plan or Other Health Issues. Like I said before just wondering if anyone else is going thru this with their child. What has helped or not helped?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well we had the ARD Meeting at school and as of right now the school is going to provide my son with jumbo crayons and pencils and some special clay to work with his hands. We are going to do this for about 6-8 weeks and then the school is going to do a Occupational Therapy Evaluation to see if he qualifies for help. Basically the school right now says he is to little to even be diagnosised with dysgraphia. As for the seizures I had spoke with the school nurse and she wrote a letter with my permission to anyone that comes in contact with my son to let them know of his health situation.

Dear D.;
First and foremost I am sorry to hear about your child. I have a boyfriend who has bilateral seizures which mimick silent seizures in children and he is being medically discharged for them. Have you tried medication yet? I know we hate to medicate our children but seizures can debilitate. Also, stress triggers the boyfriends...have you talked to the doctor about that?

As for special education I had the problem of once a doctor telling me my child had a speech delay...it took two years to get him into the education system to get help...he also mimicks autistic behaviors. I had to send him to California for what they call and IEP and once he came back the school system in Texas couldn't argue with California. Try with the IEP and than if it shows anything take it to your school. You will have to fight the district I am sure; it took me years.

I AM A SINGLE MOTHER OF TWO A FOUR YEAR OLD AND A THREE YEAR OLD. My four year old daughter has been having seizures since three weeks of age we have been through doctors like they grow on trees. As I was growing upo I had difficulty in school due to ADHD my three year old has it too! As long as you stay in touch with the teachers and how your child is acting and doing he should do really good. Don't be a fraid to call the school weekly or daily if need be to make sure he's getting the attention he needs due to the seizures off setting his learning ability's.
Best of Luck and Let me know!

I am a single mother of two. I am epileptic. I have had no seizures for at least two years. I have tied several different meds to find one that won't make me break out in hives. The medication that I am taking is called Topamax. The next time that you see the doctor, ask him if your child can qualify for a procedure that will stop the seizures. Most children grow out of it if I am not mistaken.

I am going to assume that you are already seeing an occupational therapist - if you aren't, you should be. Because of his seizures, insurance may cover it. Depending on the severity of your son's dysgraphia you may find "Draw Write Now" and or "Handwriting without tears" helpful.

In addition, lots of playdoh and activities that require fine motor skills - like unlocking a door with a key or putting together puzzles.

Good luck.

dear D.,
I am a single mom of three one of them is ADHD and the other is ADD and he is depressed. When you go to the ard also mention if he can maybe qualify under any other program to assist him in his learning disability. My sons didnt qualify for it either acedemically but because of the adhd and add they found a loop hole. You could also try you local MHMR to see if they can help or they may even know of some resources for you to try. Good luck.....bye .... T..
