The mother of 10 children, K. has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with a specialty in Child Development. She is also trained as a Family Coach, the Founder of Lighthouse Academy, and is currently operating a joyful childcare in her home, Lighthouse Creative Learning Center. K. is a passionate crusader for children of all ages and has taught in public, private, and home schools since 1984. It brings her great joy to help open-minded individuals open their hearts, heal their lives, relationships, and ultimately, the planet.

I HIGHLY recommend taking Love and Logic classes. I am seeing remarkable positive changes in my toddler's behavior since applying the principles/ideas I've learned through attending Love and Logic classes here in Arizona. Her next classes start in February and I'm attending again. They do cost, but it's well worth it. Tell her T. sent you.

Their approach is all about tough love--being firm and consistent in letting children suffer the natural (logical) consequences of their actions, while doing so in a very gentle and loving way, having true empathy in your heart. My mom parented this way, and I really appreciate my upbringing. I feel she was a very effective and loving parent who helped prepare us for the real world. If taking the classes are out of the option due to finances, check out some Love and Logic materials at the local library for free. Here are some I recommend: a seminar on DVD "Painless Parenting for the Preschool Years," the book "Parenting with Love and Logic." They also have some great CDs full of wonderful advice and real-life applications that you can listen to in the car while driving.

Maybe the person who is telling you to take the parenting classes should pay for it. I suggest you find one, where and when and bring it to the person who thinks you need it, and let them know, that you don't have the money and if it's that important to the person who is telling you to take it, then she should be willing to pay for it. And if she doesn't pay, you can kindly remind her that she has already raised her kids and to let you raise yours!

I think their are classes open to the public through the Child Crisis Center East Valley in their Family Resource Center. They offer free classes to the public and they're located at 817 N. Country Club Dr, phone number ###-###-####. There's also a book called "Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours" by a great author/psychologist, Dr. Kevin Leman. Another resource is a website called positivediscipline.com which features books, dvd's, and seminars. I took a one night class on positive discipline for work and it made a lot of sense to me. Plus, there's a posibility that this isn't a parenting issue entirely and maybe there is an underlying physical reason for his behavior...such as lack of sleep, something in his diet that doesn't agree with him, or posibly a disorder that your pediatrician hasn't recognized yet. I would really look into all the posibilities.

You may want to check for free parenting classes through your local community center or Library. Just want to lend you words of encouragement. I have raised two boys on my own and it wasn't easy, they are now 21 and 26 and my best friends. I found that you can raise 2 children in the exact same way trying to be fair and no matter what, they will each come out different. I had 1 angel and 1 angel with an attitude. Hang in there. I found that as long as I respected my boys they respected me in return and if I tried to remember to put myself in there shoes and see through their eyes it helped. Single parenting is an exhausting job no doubt but it is so rewarding more often than the difficult times.

I was going to suggest Love and Logic as well and it looks like Tiffani already did! I want to ditto her recommendation for Keri's parenting classes. Keri is an amazing coach and you will learn a TON from her! I am a life coach and really know what I am saying when I give that recommendation. She is THE parenting coach in my opinion. Money well spent. And, just to add...regardless of whoever is telling you that you need classes, I think every parent can learn from a good coach like Keri. Most parents who take classes are awesome parents and that is why they are there. Because they care enough to learn how to do it even better and how to be ready when unique challenges come up...as they definitely will! Congratulations for being willing to learn and grow as a parent even when under the pressure of scrutiny from an outside source! Many people would just have dug their heels in to prove they are right. I admire you for taking a different road.

I just wanted to say Good For You that you are open and willing to try something else! Many people would just have had a huge fight with that grandma. Whether or not she's "right" that you need a class, you are wise and mature to recognize that we all can learn new things and sometimes reading all the books doesn't always work. I wish you all the best and hope a class does give you some new ideas!
