Paraguard Issues?

I was just wondering the pros and cons of the paraguard IUD. I hestiate to do the hormonal IUD, Mirena, with the potential side effects. But I'm also concerned about the heavier periods associated with paraguard, and also having metal in my body. Metal can cause problems over time, but its so tiny maybe its ok. But did anyone have any issues with the paraguard? Like it? Hate it? I'm leaning towards having my husband get a vas., but he is resistant, and I've heard stories of women getting pregnant after that too.

What can I do next?

I too have the same questions. Husband is resistant towards the vasectomy. I don't know enough to make a decision which way to go. I would like to see others opinions on what they're using????????????

I had the Paraguard for about 3 years and loved it. I did have heavy periods, but my doctor assured me that my body was acting the same way it would without any chemicals in my body. When we decided to try for another baby, I had it removed and was pregnant the next month. I have heard so many negative stories about the Mirena, I would definately recommend the Paraguard! Good luck and God Bless :)

I have a paragard and love it. I had it put in right after my son was born 2.5 years ago and have had no problems. My period is quite heavy the first two days of my cycle, but I don't have bad cramping at all. Then two days of a light period, then two days of just intermittent spotting. We do want to have more kids, so I wanted something undoable, and hormonal stuff gives me migranes, so we weren't going that route. Good luck with your decision.

I am on my 3rd Paraguard and would never use anything else. When I had the first two taken out, I was able to get pregnant right away (literally!) and never had more than 3 or 4 heavier than normal periods while my body adjusted to having it in. Once I got past that, it was just like normal. I do not tolerate any extra hormones in my system, so the Paraguard was the perfect option for me and it has worked like a charm. I love it and would recommend it to ANYONE and EVERYONE who is looking for a safe, effective birth control method.

I just had my second Paraguard put in. The first time around, I hadn't been pregnant before and it took my body almost a year and a half to adjust to it (long periods, heavy bleeding, cramping). With number two, things are completely different. Insertion was much easier and I only had an afternoon of cramping and a few days of discharge.

Some people do have troubles with copper sensitivities. I never did, but I took B-complex and zinc (10-30mg/day) supplements to help my body flush any extra copper. I'd recommend avoiding prenatals or multivitamins that have copper in them, if you've got the Paraguard.

As far as getting pregnant, my OB said he's had 6 people in 15 years get pregnant on the Paraguard. I had the first one for three years and never had a scare, and I'm a fertile Myrtle (conceived twins in the 2nd month).

I like it.

I have the Paragard now. It's my first time with an IUD, but I am very happy with it. I've had it in for 14 months. My periods are heavier and longer, even now. They went from 4 days to 8. Maybe it would taper off, but I am considering having it taken out in 3 months to try to get pregnant again. I hate hormones, even the slightest amount make me so mean and irritable. I have had NO side effects (hormonally) from the Paragard, and I will probably use it forever. I will tell you the my husband said he felt it once or twice when I first had it put in, but he doesn't anymore. Goodluck!

Mine were never really that heavy. I am heavier now after 9 months post partum. I have heard the first 4-5 are heavier after giving birth.
Your first 2 might be, but i have such a light flow normally that it barely gave me a normal flow
