My friend has a 5 year old step daughter that has resently started to pee her pants. She has done it at school and at home while playing. I would normally stay out of it and let the parents take care of it, but this girl is my daughters best friend and I would like them to be able to play more, but the girl gets in trouble for peeing her pants, and there for not alowed to play with my daughter. Her parents are stumped at why this is happening and what to do about it, so any suggestions would be a big help. Thank

What can I do next?

the other posts are right on. It could also be that she's getting involved in what she's doing and not taking time to go.

I am sure the parents are very frustrated, but an accident is an accident and not necessarily intentional.

Maybe they could set a timer that every time it goes off, she has to get up and go to the bathroom. Whether she thinks she needs to or not.

Age 5 is when a lot of new things happen. Starting school, changing classes, a multitude of things. Maybe she's stressed out about something new. If they've ruled out any medical complications.

I had this issue around 1st grade and it was mostly due to the change in school setting. I had just changed from one school to another, and the former school had closed classrooms and the new on was open around a mulitpurpose area. And the restrooms were farther away. But I had to make time to go.

hi my name is T....a few months ago my daughter was doing the same thing she is 6...well i took her to the doctor which sent me straight to the hospital because my daughter had a kidney infection...obviously i wasn't keeping a close eye on her...because she had symptoms of uti...so i highly recommened to have the girl checked as soon as possible because its hard to see a young child suffer so much because of pain...but hopefully its not an uti because it really hurts...she also might have a small bladder which causes children to void often...my sister has that...she should get checked

There are a few reasons that i've heard why children do this sort of thing.
1. They want attention, something has changed dramatically in their lives and they want attention.
2. Some sort of medical condition, can be as simple as a bladder infection.
I'm not sure if this helps you,I hope so. good luck to your friend and her step daughter.

It would be my suggestion to have her checked to rule out a urinary tract infection or bladder/kidney infection first, especially if she is doing it all of a sudden

Hi S.:
First of all i would like to address the fact that this girl gets into trouble for having accidents. Pretty sure that she feels bad enough for having the accidents and to have her parents show their disapproval, probably out of frustration , is more than likely just making things worse for this little girl.
Some common cause could be that she is stressed out over something, and her parents are probably adding to the stress by punishing her. It could also be a medical condition. Maybe she has some sort of an infection?! I think that the parents should address their pediatrician on this. Maybe they should talk with her first and maybe they can figure it out for themselves, if it is something in her life that is causing this.
Just for the record, i am not judging her parents, i am sure they are wonderful and they are just at their wits end.
K.

My mother always said you should never punish a kid while 'potty training' and one of my friends says you're not fully done potty trining till the kids like 5. I personally don't think they should be punishing her for doing, I don't think it's on purpose. The disipline could be setting them all back.

My daughter also went throught this and it wasn't until I took her to the chiropractor that we were able to find help. It turns out she had given her cousin, who is around the same age, a piggy back ride. She threw her back out, putting pressure on her kidneys, thus causing her to wet herself. She was around the same age, and we were stumped, but a few trips to our chiropractor was all it took! She starts high school next year and is planning on becoming a chiropractor herself!! Hope this helps!

It might be a UTI and should be checked by a doc. The only other thing I can say about this is: Kids get wrapped up in what they are doing and forget to listen to what their body is telling them. They should remind her to go on a regular basis. That's what I had to do with my little one. He would wet at school and I'd have to go give him extra pants. The teachers all said it was because he was so involved in his school work that he'd forget to go and then would have an accident on the way to the bathroom. After a week of reminding him every half an hour, he started going on his own again. Good Luck!!!
