My kids are on amoxicillin twice a day. This morning I forgot to give it to them until about 2:30pm. I had planned to wait until 11 or so tonight to give them their second dose. I had to run to the store and my husband put the kids to bed and gave them their antibiotic, not knowing that I didn't give it to them until 2 today. So they only had 6 hours in between doses. Do we need to go to the ER? I have been on hold with the only 24 hour pharmacy in the area forever and I am just trying to get an answer. Help!

What can I do next?

They are fine. The reason antibiotics are spaced every 12 hrs is because they work better when the amount in the body is maintained throughout the day. It's probably better that hubby put them to bed and that they weren't up until 11 they need their rest.

Nope. It's practically impossible to OD on antibiotics (in fact, I'm not even sure it *is* possible on amoxicillan). The worst that would happen downing a bottle of them (60 count) is stomach cramping and diarrhea.

I realize this is old but I want to say for future problems for anyone reading this I'm pretty sure Poison Control could help you know what to do. I had a similar situation where I overdosed my little one with Advil, I called them they were very reassuring. they are easier and faster to call then a Dr or pharmacy after hours always available and if they cant help you they will tell you if you need to go to an ER

Relax. They are fine! If you want a more professional opinion, call the advice nurse at the hospital or call the doctor who prescribed the medicine. The office will have an answering service who will call the doctor on call.

The reason for spacing the doses is to maintain an even amount in one's system to continuously fight the bacteria. Work your way back to a 12 hour schedule allowing an hour or two difference if it's more convenient.

Nope -- Kids are fine. Maybe give them some yogurt though as antibiotics can be a little hard on our digestive systems.

Your kids will be fine. Actualy, this is what you do with Abx - take the dose as soon as you remembered and the next dose as scheduled.
Just try not to do it again - it will mess the timing and they will not work.
