I have pancreatitis and I have to have surgery this Friday. I have to get part of my pancreas removed and my entire spleen and gallbladder. Has anyone ever had surgery for pancreatitis? If so, how long is the recovery time?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone!!!!
I am finally back to work after my pancreatic surgery. I didn't have to get my gallbladder removed. The doctor said that it looked very good. I only had my spleen and the tail end of my pancreas removed. The surgery went well but I had a few complications after the surgery. It was all the doctor's fault. He couldn't fit the NG tube up my nose while I was under ansthesia because it was too big. Instead of him trying a smaller one, he just decided not to put one at all. 3 days after the surgery, I got sick and i threw up bile for 12 straight hours which caused my incision to rupture a little. To make a long story short, I had to end up getting an NG tube put up my nose while I was awake which took 7 attempts. They finally realized that I have a small nasal passage and that the NG tubes that they were using were too big. Also, I had to have part of my incision re-stiched which was very painful. All of this should never have happened but the doctor was negligent. But anyway, I am on the road to recovery. I haven't gotten my appetite back but I'm forcing myself to eat. I've lost 25 pounds which is pretty extreme so I'm trying to eat but I just don't have an appetite but I'm sure it will come back in time. I just want to thank all of you that prayed for me while I was out. Your prayers were definitely felt and I am eternally grateful. I love(agape) each and everyone of you and I am truly, truly thankful for your support.

Dear A., I have take care of people who have had this type of surgery, also I have taken care of people who were suffering with pancreatitis. It is painful for them and they are very sick/ But it will depend on you and your body. Have your surgeon pray with you before surgery.

I would plan at least 6 weeks. I am an OBGYN physician and have had several patients undergo this. I hope all goes well.

Hi A.,
Don't know anything about the surgery, just wanted to say good luck, hope everything goes well with your surgery.

I know it will probably be difficult to be out of comission for a few weeks, not being able to do the usual mom stuff.

Take it easy, hope you have good friends and family to help you out.

A. you poor girl you have had your share! I have had my gallbladder removed like 20 some years ago I had the old time surgery where they cut ya from one end to the other and that was like 4 weeks recovery time. My sister had her gallbladder removed a few years ago but she lucked out and got it done laser so her recovery time was really fast! Now are they doing all of yours by laser or opening you up the old time way? Lisa, I thought you could not live without a pancrease?

My step mom had her entire pancreas removed. She pretty much stayed in her bed for a week. Then only moved as little as possible for an additional week. After the 2nd week she started doing pretty good. She just needed to pay attention to her body and know her limits.

After your surgery dont try to do the mom thing - we are not superhero's, so ask for help and remember to pay attention to your body. Good Luck on Friday!!

Pancreatitis is a chronic disease..my mom has it ans as far as i know it never goes away, maybe the part they are taking out will get rid of it. you should feel better within a few days as far as pain goes, but be careful with your food intake..diabetes usually accompanies your illness, I found that when mom eats to many sweets and carbs she gets yet anther bout of pancreatitis.
