Hi All,
My dentist can no longer work on me because my jaw locks! This disorder has gotten worse over the years and I don't know why. I saw a neurologist last week who said my left side was out of socket and I may need Bioesthetic Dentistry. Well, that would mean a custom made splint and $15,000 of work to "correct the bite. I'm so confused and just want the pain to stop. Thanks for any advice you can give.
E.~

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone,
Thank-you so much for the advice. I'm seeing Dr. Buckles in Plano..he is a Maxo Facial Surgeon. He put me on Muscle relaxers at night, anti-inflammatory pills during the day, and a liquid diet for 1 week. Well, the week is up and I have no pain-------this is great! I chose Dr. B because he is the only one in my insurance network. I can slowly start introducing some "real" food and will start treatments in another week. We are also considering a orthotic splint. If this does not work, or if the insurance does not cover, I'm going to a chiropractor. You are all very sweet!

E., I had a whole lot of preceedures 2 years ago for TMJ (my 4 year old boy jumped up with full force into my chin - agony) - it cost 5,000.00 up front. What I would suggest first is that you go to a SOT chiropractor (different from the regular kind & very hard to find!!) The only one I have visited alot is Kathy Mahler, Health by Hands
www.healthbyhandswellness.com
2510 Little Road,
Arlington, TX 76016
phone: ###-###-####
fax: ###-###-####

Secondly, I have heard of a teacher at Parker Chiropractic College off 35 but I will have to give you his name later.

You are going to feel heaps better after one visit.

I suggest the chiropractor! I just went 3 weeks ago. I suffered for 6 months, and I found a chiropractor who specialized in tmj. He still has some work to do, as it still pops but after one one hour visit, I have had no pain. Affordable, too, I paid $65.00 for the first visit. Good luck.

Two years ago, I started having terrible pain in my ear and jaw area and also chronic sinus pressure. After many doctor appointments I was luckily directed to Dr. Holt in Euless. He specializes in TMJ disorders and other such things. I was amazed at how bad my TMJ was. I always thought I had a small mouth because it didn't open very wide. After all the treatment it now opens twice as much as it did in the beginning. I don't recall the cost of everything, at that point it didn't matter, I was like you and just wanted the pain to go away. But I know it was no wear near $15,000. I also referred my uncle to him. He drove 2 hours to his office because he got such great results after he was in agony for 3 year. He did end up with nerve damage because he had been misdiagnose for so long. I would at least have a consultation with him. He gave me an ointment to help immediately until he could get the swelling down enough to get my jaw back in place and was able to fit me with a splint. His number is ###-###-####. The whole office staff is very helpful. Good luck.

I've had TMJ for 30+ years. One of the things that has helped me the most is magnesium - many, many Americans are very deficient and it's needed for the muscles to relax. I take about 2000 mg/day, including Natural Calm at nite. Also, my dentist made me a bite guard for $400 that works great - and it is custom made to fit, so I don't know why something would cost $15,000. If I go without it for more than a day, the pain is back. So, I would try another dentist. That all said, I did get my bite straightened about 20 years ago, but that really didn't help ;), but that was only about $4000.

Talk to a chiropractor. I don't know if they can help you or not, but one is working on my grandmother right now and giving her more relief than surgeries and pain meds ever did. It can't hurt just to get an opinion.
