Painful Postpartum periods...is This Normal?

I have had two periods since having my baby (she is now 9 months old), and they have been unpleasant to say the least. Lots of bleedings..ehh, lots and like throbbing pain down there and feeling swollen (thats the best I cand describe what I have been feeling). I'm wondering if this is normal after having a baby, and if so when does it go back to more of a normal period. I just don't want to have them like this much more, and wanted to ask before calling the doctor.

Thanks so much :)

What can I do next?

I had the same feeling you are describing after our first daughter was born with each period. Everything was normal, my cycle just changed. It was definitely more painful, but was shorter. I just had our 2nd daughter 6 weeks ago, so I'm wondering how they will change this time. Not looking forward to it.

My periods have been very bad after each of my babies, I had my 3rd child almost 6 months ago. I breastfed until each one was 3 months old and my last period finally started to show signs of improvements, it was my 3rd period since having Chase. I did have some other factors that could be contributing to the heavy periods though. All 3 of deliveries where c-sections and on the last one I had my tubes tied also. I have heard that those things will cause heavier periods for a while too but I am not sure. Hopefully things will get better soon and if you are worried go ahead and call your doc. He/she may be able to tell you that it's nothing to worry about over the phone.

I don't know if something could be left up in there. It seems like after 2 months you would have had raging infection if so. But for me, I had really easy periods after all 4 of my children. It was almost as if my periods were reset. The longer I go between births, the worse my periods get. It's been 9 years and I am anxiously hoping for menopause because we won't be having any more babies to ease up my periods :)

I would think everyone is very different but that if these periods are much different than the periods you normally have, you should get an appointment asap.

Your body is just trying to get back to normal. I would not worry about it too much. But if there is a lot of clotting then you should see your doctor. Some clotting is normal, but an abundance of it is not. Also if you are going through more than 8 pads a day, you really do need to see your doctor. You could be losing more blood than you need to be and could become anemic.

I am sorry about your baby. I don't know how much research you have done. But here is a helpful webpage about the condition: http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/epilepsy_infantilespasms

Take care.

I got on birth control as soon as the bleeding stopped after birth...so, periods were normal fast. My friends who continued breastfeeding said they had difficult/unusual periods, but no swelling or pain. Might want to check with your OB/GYN to be sure. Birth control really regulated me fast. Now, I have light cycles and am very comfy (my little one is almost 9 months).
