My 3 year old has been in an arm cast for a week...He gets it off in another 2. I'm told that it will be painful. How painful is it for him? And for how long?? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I had a cast for 6 weeks, and removing the cast wasn't painful. Using the arm immediately after the cast removal was painful as things weren't used to moving. It passed in a day or so and it wasn't anything that tylenol couldn't help.

My baby girl, who is now almost 8YO had a cast in her little leg for over a month when she was two years old. The saw they use to remove it scared her because of the sound it made but it wasn't painful. however when they took the cast off she couldn't put her weight on her leg and I had to carry her for that day, it was painful when she tried to stand on her newly freed leg for about two days. after that she would walk really slowly until she found the confidence again to walk normally and run.

the point is it goes away within the first week but don't expect him to move his arm out of fear for the first few minutes/ hours; nothing that a tasty snack or a special toy can't fix.
the best of luck!!!

the cast cutter does not hurt at all. it has a safety feature that doesnt allow it to cut skin only the fiberglass cast. The noise is more scary than anything. It sounds like a drill but the arm will be very weak. Muscles start to get lost very quickly if not used.

Well I was a young adult when I had my arm cast and I had 2 of them. It didn't hurt but it was very weak. Its sort of like when your arm or foot falls asleep and you try to use it. It hasn't been used for along time.
