If it is like a muscle pain/cramp I suggest eating a banana a day. I felt like that when I was pregnant and if I ate 1 banana a day for the potassum(sp?) I felt fine.
Every morning I wake up with sore hands and calves. My hands fell almost swollen, but don't look swollen and my calves feel as if I had run an uphill marathon. The pain goes away once I get moving around, but I was wondering is anyone else has experienced these symptoms and what they did about them. I discussed the problem with my family doctor but he just suggested that I get more exercise since I work at a desk all day.
P.S. I did try exercising by walking more and it seemed to make the calf pain worse and my ankles started to hurt as well.
Thanks so much for all the advice! You have all given me some great ideas and I will try them out. Mamasource moms are the best!

Hi Melissa! I used to wake up from sore calves quite often. Mine were from charlie horse cramps during the night due to nutrition deficiencies. I have a friend who is an RN and she recommended USANA HEALTH SCIENCES. They are very high quality nutritionals (Manufactured like a prescription drug, but is NOT a drug!) I have not had any cramping since using them. My Dad and sister use them also because they always had cramping too. We had tried many different things, but these did the trick!! Not many people have heard about USANA around here yet. They are based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Many Olympic athletes use these products also. One thing I really noticed too is that my energy levels increased A LOT!!! Its been 6 years now, and I (and my who;e family) are still taking them!! Just wanted to let you know about them! You can check out the website and read more about it if you're interested! Hope you have a great week! Blessings!

Hi Melissa,
That has to be frustrating! I felt that way when that was happening to me a few years ago. I found that I was deficient in some nutrients.
The Moms who responded about Calcium may be on to something for you. (although there is research indicating that pasteurizing milk binds the calcium so we can't absorb much of it anyway).
Has anyone been talking with you about water intake?
If you would like we can talk about how I figured out what my body was lacking when I had that happen.
warmly, M.
Hello Melissa,
great advice here already. I also want to tell you to get your vitamin D levels checked. my levels were 30 when the range should be between 32 and 100.
See if your hands are more swollen/painful when you eat certain foods... like drinking soda or eating something with MSG.
Also, increase your magnesium intake. I also see that you've had 2 babies in the past 2 years. I think you also may need more rest. Mine were 2 years appart and I tell you, seven years later I'm still needing some extra sleep. Hang in there. you also may want to be tested for allergies/food sensitivity. My feet used to hurt a lot more until I figured out that using fluoride-free toothpaste made a HUGE difference on my feet.
Drink plenty of water. if you drink bottled water, make sure is coming from a real spring and not just filtered and having some stuff added back to it. yes, nowadays you have to read the label even on the water bottles!
Also, limit your exposure to chemicals. see the following link: http://thatorangestuff.com/toxins.shtml
these are my 2-cents worth. I hope you feel better soon. Good luck! ~Carmen~
I think, no matter what they may find wrong with you, they're going to recommend exercise. The pain from exercise is usually short-lived as your body adjusts unless you overdo it. Start slow, and always stretch before you do anything, even walking. I'm fighting a weight battle and it was hard to start exercising but it's become a necessity. When I went on a trip and was sitting a lot, I was very sore, just like I used to be. Go for it!
Make sure you are getting enough calcium and potassium and that you have supportive, comfortable shoes for walking and that you stretch after exercise. If you are not used to exercising regularly, the pain in your ankles could be temporary.
Having said all that, you may want to get a second opinion from another doctor.
Good luck!
how much milk are you drinking? The muscle soreness COULD be releived by raising your calcium intake...
Hi Melissa, I am not sure of what to tell you, but I do encourage you to pursue it. look up your symptoms on the web and see what you find. I hope you find out what's wrong.
Good luck to you. A.
Hi Melissa, I have Fibromyalga and some symptoms are pain like that in the morning...google it and see if you may have it,also go to a rhumatologist, they may be able to help. Good luck.
Lack of calcium and potassim can make your calves sore...usually it will cause a charlie horse...which can make you sore. Try bananas and a calcium supplement. Not sure about the hands. My wrists are often sore in the am...and my hands will sometimes go numb. I was told it is probably a tendon issue.
HI Melissa
This reminded me of being pregnant, I got calf cramps that would wake me up they were so bad. I got more calcium and potassium in my diet and they went away. I ate bananas, and here's a great smoothie for calcium (1 c of broccoli has more absorbable calcium than milk!) One of the problems with calcium deficiencies is most americans eat to much protein, the body needs calcium to precess protein and will take it from your bones if your not getting enough. So maybe check out the www.pcrm.org/ Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and see what diet pyramid they have.
Green Smoothie
2 handfuls about 1/2 a lb organic spinach or organic kale
toss that in the blender w/ 2 c water and blend smooth
Add 5 frozen organic strawberries blend smooth
add 1 c blueberries to fix the color if that bothers you. I do this for my kid
1 banana add more water if needed for your blender.
You could add a protein powder and have that for breakfast. I serve this to get veggies in my kid, and more veggies in my husband. You can use different fruit what ever you like.
I hope that helps, A. H
You may have developed a food sensitivity
Foods in the nightshade family can cause symptoms of arthritis -- do you eat a lot of nightshades? Potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, pepper, tobacco
Gluten could be a culprit as well (wheat, oats barley, rye, malt flavoring) -- you could have the doc run a blood test to screen for celiac sprue
I would recommend doing lots of stretching before going to bed and first thing in the morning. The exercise will help in the long run, but might make it worse at first. You might want to get a good massage as well to get everything relaxed.
HI Melissa-
One possibility could be something like fibromyalgia. Please look at your diet- my friend got fibromyalgia really bad- she had a desk job and sat and drank diet Coke all day. Doctors could not help her at all.She took matters into her own hands and stopped the diet pop and started eating healthy foods and she finally got better after she got all of the junk out of her body. This is just a possibility. Best of luck- I hope you feel better soon.

Hello Melissa, I don't know if this pertains to you, but I have an auto-immune disease and woke up stiff and hurting for many years. The doctors wouldn't take me serious either. It wasn't until I had to have neck surgery due to it that I was sent to the correct doctor(Rhumitologist) that I recieved a diagnosis. Hope this isn't the issue, but do insist on them believing you and answering your questions. The sore hands may be spasms also. Good luck.
Hi Melissa,
Could be any number of things, however...I have two immediate thoughts. The first could be a pinched nerve in your neck. After a terrible car accident I had the same thing - I treated at Bristol Chiropractic with Dr. Christine and have not have the problem since. Another thing, might be low magnesium. Try taking a magnesium supplement for a few weeks and see if it resolves...in the alternative have your Dr. do blood work and check the magnesium levels...bearing in mind that just because you may fall within the "normal" range for everyone else---it doesn't mean it is "normal" for you.
Regards,
Sandi
I think half the problem is the P.C.P. because general practitioners are not specialists and tend to downplay a lot because they otherwise don't know the answer which would in turn potentially cause their patients to lose confidence in them.
I would look for a specialist. If the RIGHT things make it worse, then it isn't the answer. I.e., if exercise is suggested and you do that, and it's worse, then that was not the answer and there's something more to it.
Alternatively I would find a MIGUN bed clinic and see if that helps. There's one on Orchard Lake in W. Bloomfield or in Ann Arbor at Bio Energy Medical Clinic.
The hand pain sounds like maybe carpaltunnel which I have had in both hands. If you sit behind a desk your probably using a computer and the way your hands sits on your key board your probably pinching your carpals. You should stretch your carpals and you'll be fine. In the morning stretch them and periodically during the day stretch them out. Your calfs I would strtch and see if they feel better. Maybe try rubbing them and see if theres a knot than you could massage it out and stretch drinking lots of water and stretching well will help. You can stand on a step and let your hells hang off that stretches good or lean against the wall with your arms straight out in front and rotate lunges against the wall will help to good luck.
