Pain BEFORE Using the Potty?

Peace of mind is a very wonderful thing, particularly for a Mom! If you are in doubt, by all means take her to the doctor. She should not have pain like that before she goes to the bathroom. Sometimes UTI symptoms are worst if you wait to long to go and then you feel great relief when you finally do. Or it's possible she just can't express to you what is going on. But if she's screaming, I'd take her to see the doctor. Always better safe than sorry! Good luck.

CALL THE DOCTOR! Even if it is nothing, this is the first place to start with those symptoms. Could be another infection - no matter what the DR can help with the potty training issues too.

I'd talk to her pediatrician and have her checked for a possible UTI, seems like that is a possibility as she complains of sharp pain just before going to the bathroom. Wouldn't hurt and maybe the pediatrician has other ideas as well.

My 3 year old daughter did the same thing a few months back, while she was potty training. I am expecting in October and you noted that you are expecting in November. I had to have a couple of talks with her about "the baby in Mommy's belly", b/c she was under the impression that she had one as well and that it was hurting her. I showed her pictures from pregnancy books and assured her that it did not hurt. She finally got it and the complaining went away. I think that she was just overhearing me making complaints about the baby kicking or making me feel sick/tired... and may have caught me watching a couple of episodes of A Baby Story on tv. Kids can be quite receptive as to what gets their parents attention!!

CJ here, the marketing director for C.'s business. If I were you I would request a sonogram from your doctor just be on the safe side. I'm sure she's fine and it's nothing major but my son from 2 months old to 5 1/2 months was misdiagnosed w/ being gassy and overfull and that's why his stomach was growing and had alot of abdominal pain. We were fed up because he wasn't getting better so we went back in and saw another doctor and right away she ordered a sonogram and was very concerned. It turns out that there was (once again- i'm sure this isn't what's wrong w/ your daughter), he had a 2 and a 1/2 lb tumor growing in his abdomen. They removed it the next day and 6 1/2 yrs later he's doing great. So even though it probably is nothing major better to have it checked and know for sure. That way if it turned out to be something, the earlier you catch it the better. Sorry to be a downer, it may just be something in her diet.Hope tis helps and please let me know how things turned out. I would wonder about a blatter infection instead of an UTI. Maybe she is holding it to long which started an infection. I would just call the doctor to have her checked. then again it could be nothing and she is holding it to long which to her might hurt in her stomach because she doesn't really understand the difference of the feeling of pressure and pain. I would just call the doctor and see if you can get an appointment right away.

My daughter is 2 and is crying just before she poops. she will say her bum hurts. Then she has a bm and is fine. So I still called and they said to watch her and see if it got worse or any changes happened. So I would call and let them know what is going on. It wont her you or her to talk with a nurse. Absolutely you should go to the doctor and have her tested, if only to rule out a serious problem. There is always the possibility that it is a UTI. Small children sometimes have trouble explaining/describing/expressing specific bodily sensations; she could be having other symptoms and just not know how to tell you.

And no, you are not "overreacting". If your child is in pain, it is natural to have a reaction.

Yes, please take you child to your Pediatrician! Anytime a child cries and screams in pain it should be investigated. Don't wait.

It could be a kidney infection, she may not feel pain when urinating. Get to your pediatrician asap just incase it is. Good luck. L.

L., I think you should go with your instincts and contact your physician. What can that hurt? Better to be safe than sorry. When it comes to over reacting, I would suggest that what matters most is how you respond in front of your child(ren). Responding to your daughter in a calm manner will help avoid her associating a panic response or anxiety to the event. I think calling the physician will allow you to do this more effectively.

JUST TO BE SAFE...take her to the dr. and get a UTI or bladder infection ruled out. Better to be safe than sorry and at that age...you never know. Also, husbands ALWAYS say the mom's are overreacting, but that's why WE'RE the moms. We have instincts and usually our instincts are right. Don't hesitate - just go and put you mind to rest. It sounds like a bladder infection. They don't always present with a fever or other symptoms. I would get her checked out. Good luck! Trust that mommy intuition.

No offense, and maybe I am misreading your posting, but it seems that she woke up screaming (and she was in underpants I assume) and you didn't put her on the potty immediately? Even if she wasn't screaming, the first thing you should do upon her waking is put her on the potty. Any kid should be taken to the bathroom upon waking. I know that I myself go to the bathroom the first thing upon waking! I don't think you need the doctor. You say yourself she doesn't have pain if she has on a diaper and just goes. I think what she has is ANXIETY about peeing in her underpants. She is holding it and holding it so as not to ruin her underwear and this is causing pain. She doesn't want to disappoint you with an accident. Try taking her to the potty every hour or so, even if she doesn't have to go. Why don't you take her in and YOU go and then let HER go. Say to her: "I don't know if I have to pee, but I am going to try." Then if you don't, say, "Oh well, I guess I didn't have to go. Now it's your turn." This will ease her anxiety and let her know you don't mind wasting time taking her in there. Tell her too to relax and she won't get in trouble if she has to keep asking you to go potty, even if nothing comes out. PLUS, remember to take her to the bathroom before she goes to bed at night too. She might have to go and doesn't say anything and then she holds it all night. Good luck.

I would definitely make an appointment for her to be tested for a UTI but it could also be that she's just waiting too long. Especially if she was crying for an hour...that's a long time to wait if you have to go. Maybe taking her to the potty a little more often will eliminate the pain.

Hi...if I were you I would take her to the Doctor...my Grand daughter had the same symptoms and she had a urinary tract infection...

I have heard that holding it for a long time before going to the bathroom can be a cause of a bladder infection. Better safe than sorry. Us moms know when something is wrong and I suggest you follow your mommy instinct!

Don't listen to your husband and MIL. Call the doctor today! That's not part of potty training. She may have an infection.

Always follow your mother instinct for future issues. It never hurts to go to the doctor, even if it turns out to be nothing.

Have you called her pediatrician?? When I have had urinary tract infections in the past the urgency to go pee can actually cause pain and if she has one it could be bad. I wouldnt ever just dismiss a child when they say they are in pain and say "oh its just potty training" you really never know, my personal opinion would be to call the pedi and maybe taker her in and see what they say. I would hate for my child to be sick and I ignored it!

Get her checked for a UTI .. it happened to my daugter when she was teh same age. It's worth a visit to the dr.

My daughters complained of this all the time - and sometimes still do. Whenever they say, "My stomach hurts!" My first reaction is, "Let's go to the bathroom and see if it helps." I'd say about 99% of the time it solves the problem. I think sometimes they just plain are so concentrating on "holding it" that they don't think - I've held it long enough and must now recognize this urge to go. Also, I think quite often they have gas, which is released when they sit on the potty and relax. In any event, I think it is perfectly normal - and you'll just learn to think of it faster as a possible solution. FYI, my daughters have both also had serious issues with UTI's, but the symptoms are different. The stomach ache before, that is relieved when they do go, is not a UTI to my knowledge.

First of all I would not listen to anyone else especially the hubby (they are all clueless) or the MIL! Go with your gut you are the mom & you know what is best. I would go with your mother's intuition. Maybe they are right & it is just a potty training issue but maybe just maybe she has a UTI or something going on. I would call the doctor's office & explain what is going on & I am sure they will say to bring her in just to check for a UTI or something else to rule it out. Then if they find nothing wrong maybe it just is potty training thing.
But call her doctor & get an appointment don't let others talk you out of it or make you feel like you are over reacting!

I know you have already heard this but I would talk to your pediatrician. It could be kidney infection, small stones (not likely) or blatter infection. Probably isn't any of these but better to be on safe side. It is just a doctors visit to find out. And ask for sonogram if they have capability.

Call your doctor asap!!!! I went through something similiar and my son had a bad infection...go with your "mom" feelings, you know something is not right here....she also could be so worried that she is going to have an accident, that it is cause-ing her stomach pain as well, but you have to rule it all out
