Paci Weaning

I feel it is time to wean my 13 month old daughter from the pacifier and was hoping to get some pointers on doing so. As of now, she only uses it to go to bed, she is fine without it during the day. Any suggestions are welcome.; Thanks.

What can I do next?

If you can stand it, just take it away. A friend of my SIL's came over and "drove" my nephew's paci out the door on one of his toy trucks. He didn't seem to care and was much more interested in the truck driving it away. My kids had pacis for a long long time. With my son I finally just let him bite his way through them. Once they had a hole, they were done and weren't replaced. On the last one that he found, I cut a hole in when he wasn't looking.

When we decided to get rid of our son's binky, we just took it away. No ifs, ands or buts. We told him they were for babies and he's no longer a baby. He was 19 months old and we did it at the same time as the switch from the crib to the bed (he climbed out of the crib so we didn't have much choice about that one).

My son never asked for it after the first night, and a few months later we found one and I handed it to him. He looked at it for a second then opened the trash can and threw it away while telling me "binky for baby I big boy"

We went with the cold turkey way with my son when he was 18 mo. He actually was down to one nuk and he dropped it down a vent and it ended up in the airduct work in our basement. We decided not to buy him another one. He went around the house for 2 days looking for "buddy" and then he forgot all about it. He is now 22 months and hasnt looked back.

This is straight from Supernanny and if I had used binkys with mine this is what I would have done.... Ask her to help you get all the binkys together and put them in a pretty bag that she helped decorate for the "Binky Fairy." Tell her all about the binky fairy and that she comes to take the binkys when you do not need them anymore and leaves you a new lovie ... this is when you get her a new doll or something to soothe with.

I just went thru this a few wks ago with my almost 2 yr old. One day I decided to try that "snip the tip" method just to see how it went. I wasn't very hopeful and sure didn't hold my breath that it was going to work. Well, I cut a little off for about 4 days and it worked. I am still SHOCKED. There was not a single tear over it. She just started putting it down or holding it rather than putting it in her mouth. After a week, they were completely gone and not a mutter of "paci" from her since. I'd try that method before cold turkey since it's so painless and fairly easy. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Good luck! :)

I always tell people: whichever way you ultimately do it, just stand your ground.

For my oldest daughter we cut the tip entirely off of it at 18 months, told her it was broke. (Hid all the others in the house) She picked up and threw it in the trash. She asked for it a few times and we reminded her it was broke, and that was that. She never cried for it, nothing.

For my youngest, we were out shopping one day and she lost it in the store. We realized it when we got to the car. Later that night, she asked for it and right after asking said it was lost. I went along with this, yup thats right you lost it in the store. Again, she would ask for it for a couple days, we would remind her, and that was that. Never cried, nothing. (Oh and we were a little delayed on this one, she was about 26 months old)

Good luck!

At this age, she'd get over really quickly. Just take it away and be done. Good luck.

I used the paci fairy story with my daughter, but I think she was around two and a half. It worked like a charm and she still believes the fairy came and took her pacifier to give to another needy child. The fairy left her an inexpensive stuffed animal as a "parting gift" :-). Here's a link to a book about it:

13 months old, is pretty young. All the Binky fairy and stuff would mane zero sense to her. Fortunately, this is a pretty easy age to wean from anything. Just take it away. We did it with my son and he never even asked or cried for it. He went to sleep and stayed asleep fine.

my husband was very useful in this department. My daughter was 2 when we decided to get rid of her binky. She loved her binky so much that if we did not have one at night and my husband and I could not find it then we were both either running to walmart or one of us would go. It was bad. Well we decided to try to wean her and first we started of taking it cold turkey. That did not work. Then I tried the cutting binky idea and that did not work. So my husband said to our daughter lets go to a walk and visit the ducks since she loved the ducks alot. The fed the ducks and he told her that every time they made a quack they were crying and needed a binky so help soothe them. So what did they do about the cryig ducks??? My husband and daughter went home had her gather all the binky's and headed back to the duck pond. She threw all the binky's to the quack quacks so she called them and mommy came after they walked off and picked them up and threw them in the trash. Never again did she ask for a binky or want one. Good Luck!

I don't know if this works for not, but someone suggested it to me once. They said to cut the end of the binki off. Apparently it's less desirable to suck on. worth a try.
