Craigslist is a great resource to find somewhere to stay overnight. You can search through houston and it would list the surrounding available places or go to Austin craiglist and do the same. I would say Austin or San Antonio. I myself am heading to Kerrville where the scenery is breathtaking and they actually have an art festival and activities for the kids this weekend.... beautiful town. My father in law lives there on a hill and we go to the top and soak in the beauty :) Have fun and be safe...remember, places like New Braunfels will be PACKED with crazy kids....believe me, I was one of them that use to take the day trip there on weekends like this...

Moody Gardens in Galveston is fun. There is a lot to do- Butterfly Garden, beach entry pool, etc. There is also the (I'm gonna totally spell it wrong) Schlitterbaun in Galveston now too. If I remember correctly half of it is covered- no sunburn!

Have a great time, wherever you go!!

Jellystone park is awesome for a family vacation and low cost too in Waller which is close by. Google it. There is also one in Canyon Lake area that is nice.

My mom lives right near you in Spring. She has said that New Braunfels. ( not sure of the spelling sorry!) is pretty neat.

If you're planning to do this this weekend, you will be limited as to staying overnight. This is a major weekend and, at least in Oregon, everything near tourist sites is booked in advance.

Have you tried googling your county and the counties around yours. These days most communities with interesting things to do have web sites. If necessary you could be on vacation from home. I've done that and had a good time.
