I have a 4 yr old daughter who has been doing great at the every day stuff - has been in big girl pants since before she turned 3 ... but she still wears pull-ups at night and yes they are drenched in the morning. I have been telling her I am not buying any more diapers and when the ones we have are gone she has to learn ... is this realistic? I am down to just a few and am not sure if I am setting her up for failure .. Any ideas? suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After reading all your advice I decided to give her body more time and to let her tell me when she's ready rather than when I am ready.

Thanks for your help!

Well E., good luck. I have a 4 yr old boy and he was very stubborn about potty training at night. He wore pull ups also until finally that was it and I did the same thing as you did and told him no more pull ups after these are gone. You said it now you have to follow through on it. Put some "big girl" pantys on her and make a big deal about it. Give her great encouragement about being able to sleep all night without going potty in her panties. With my son I would set my alarm during the night and get up ,go to him-wake him up, and take him to the bathroom so he could go in the toilet. If you don't catch it in time-thats ok-accidents happen-don't make her feel guilty about it-just change the sheets and everything and start all over. It will take a little while but it worked for me. Also no drinks after 6-7pm,depending when bedtime is. But you have to follow through on it if you start doing this. Consistancy is important. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

My son was the same. He was out of diapers during the day at 22 months and then needed 2 full years beffore he stopped soaking a diaper at night. Then suddenly it stopped. I put the same diaper on him 7 nights in a row and it was still dry every morning and that was it - no more diapers.

I'm sort of in the same boat. My daughter will be 4 in December. She's been daytime potty-trained since right after her 3rd birthday. She seemed to be on the way to sleeping in underwear so I tried it for a week, but I must've changed her sheets 3 or 4 times. I have talked to my pediatrician about this and she basically told me not to worry about her still being in pull-ups at night right now. I'm relaying that to you. She told me to worry if she's getting to be 5 or 6 and still having a problem. Try cutting back on drinking before bed, or alternating between undies and pull-ups. Do one night underwear and one night pull-ups, and see where it goes from there. But for the most part, you'll know before too long if she's comfortable enough to start sleeping in underwear. Good luck!

This is what our pediatrician said. He does not worry about it until kids are about 6. Kids sleep so hard that they just don't wake up when their bladder is full. Most of the time they won't wake up after they've gone. So we didn't really push it with dd. At age 5, I decided to cut back on drinks way before bedtime. Even then she'd still go for awhile. After she went a couple of weeks with dry pull-ups, we went to panties. She's been fine since. Of course there were a few accidents.

If your dd's pull-ups are drenched every morning, then the odds are she just isn't ready.
