Does anyone out there use a nanny and have had to have her work overnights while you go out of town? The woman I work for is going out of town for 3 days and two nights (approx. 60 hours). Neither of us have done this before so I am not sure how to charge her? What is customary for this?

Hi J.,
My husband and I just got back from a weekend away and we paid our nanny $100 a night CASH. Friday 5pm - Sunday 12pm We also left cash for her to use on the kids and our car to drive to McD or CCheese or to order in food. If during the week, I would of paid her the weekly salary and negotiated a different rate for overnight. It really depends what the family can seriously afford. You should be paid accordingly. If they can afford to be away, they can afford safe and caring childcare. Good Luck

My nanny has stayed overnight with my kids and I have paid her hourly rate minus the time that the kids were sleeping (not counting naps because she usually gets paid for nap time) and then I have tacked on some bonus pay. So, for example, if she had them for 24 hours and the kids would usually have slept 12, I would pay her for 12 at her hourly rate and then give her an extra $25-30 bonus. Other moms I know have done this as well.

When I did this with my nanny we worked out a flat fee for the days - I think I gave her $150 a day which was based loosely on her hourly salary. I also left emergency money ($200) and a stipend for food ($50).

While I have no direct experience, I have read from other mommy posts that (1) while the child is awake it is your normal pay and when the child is asleep at night it is 1/2 pay OR (2) while the child is awake it is your normal pay and when the child is asleep at night it is a flat rate/night - say $40/night.

Just some thoughts.

J., I don't know if this is the norm because I am helping out a friend who is recently divorced but she needed someone to stay with her 2 boys for several days due to her business schedule and she paid me $100 a night. I thought that seemed high, especially for a friend but that is what she wanted to pay me. Don't know if that helps at all but at least it is somewhere to start. M.
