Try sizing up to 6. When I used disposables (before my switch to cloth) usually sizing up will solve the problem. And he's 18 months old, absolutely no reason to cut down on his liquids. He will not be night trained for a long time!
for the past week my son has been waking up at the crack of dawn, soaked up to his nipples with pee and not able to go back to sleep. He's been such a grump and I know he's waking this early because of his soggy situation. We've been using Fisher-Price Happy Nights diapers, and they just don't seem to be cutting it. He's 18 months old and 30 pounds, we use size 5's for him. I've even started cutting his liquid intake an hour before bedtime but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Anyone have any luck with other brands of overnight diapers?
I went out and bought a size 6 pack of Huggies Overnights, and had two coupons that applied so I got the 23 pack for $6! (originally 11.99). We tried them out at naptime and they worked well, and tonight will be night 1. I appreciate everyone's imput :) Waking him up at night to change him is not an option though, if he gets woken up at all he will think its playtime and will not go back to sleep, then scream for hours on end and be completely miserable for days (he's very sleep-sensitive haha) and i'm 7 months pregnant and can't let him get in the habit of waking up for playtime in the middle of the night. I also think I'm going try out the diaper doublers too, they're pretty cheap and sound like such a great idea! Thanks everybody for the wonderful advice

Just tried the poise pad across his belly and had dry PJ's for the first time in weeks! (2.25 yrs, 40 lb boy). Thank you moms!
When my son was a toddler and he'd wake up wet through, what I started doing was checking his diaper before I went to bed - usually about 3 hours after he went to bed. He was already wet then! Once I started with a quickie diaper change in the crib, the peeing through stopped. Disposables aren't meant to hold multiple wettings. I'd check your son before you go to bed and see if you need to diaper him.

ETA: I didn't wake my son up to change him. He'd sleep in a diaper and onsie, I'd unsnap the onsie and change the diaper, no wiping or anything, and he would stay pretty much or totally asleep.
In my opinion, althought Huggies claim to have that unique hour-glass design, they COMPLETELY SUCK! They leak like crazy as they have less space where you need it to catch things from the inside coming out. They are also very prone to blow-outs for the same reason. I have had total luck with the Pampers (the Swaddlers one (Crusisers when she gets older), not Baby Dry) brand. For night time, I place the 'next size up' on my little one. So if she wears a 4 during the day, use a 5 at night. It may seem a little big on the torso, but all that space is great! For us it worked really well.
Good luck.
Check out this link on the same question. Lots of good info and the Mom replied stating what worked.

My daughter had the same problem. We switched to Huggies overnights, and they are amazing. I usually buy one size up from her 'regular' diaper size. (Up to you on that one) No more night waking due to wetness:) hope this helps. Good luck
Just my two cents: I use Huggies overnight also and a Poise pad in it for my son. I've found the best results putting the poise pad across his front, almost around the waist in the front. And I've liked the longer Poise pads (vs. the regular length). My son (now 2) is a belly sleeper and we went through a phase of daily wet p.j.'s and sheets. But this seems to be helping a lot.
Also, we've discovered that sometimes the p.j.'s you use, or how you use them makes a difference. If you have two-piece p.j.'s (as opposed to a one-piece sleeper), don't tuck in the shirt. Otherwise, the bottom of the shirt starts to wick the moisture from the diaper until the whole shirt is soaked. Also, make sure the waistband of the bottoms is not wrapped around over the top of the diaper. This can also wick moisture. When we switched from two-piece to one-piece p.j.'s, we had a lot less leaky diapers. Now that we're back in two-piece, we've learned how to put them on to avoid leaks.
Good luck!

I'm old-fashioned, so I always looked for the cheapest solution. I padded the diaper with another diaper, folded inside out the long way for my granddaughter. My son was wearing a double diaper with a third folded inside before he was potty trained (those were cloth ones). You can also buy a dozen cheap washcloths and use them for padding, or use maxipads. Depends on the price(I haven't bought them in awhile!)
There's a product called diaper doublers which are an extra piece of absorbent material you can put into a diaper so they get through the night. Lots of kids will wake too much if changed, so I know this isn't an option for all. I can't remember where I found them for my grandkids the other day, probably Babies r us, but also try the pharmacy's, I don't think Walmart or Target carry them. I do know you can google it and find them online, they aren't too expensive, probably less than going up a size in diapers.
I'm having the same problem with my 9 month old and I tried the Huggies Overnights in one size up as suggested, but these leaked too (I got one good/dry night out of them but then the subsequent nights were leaks)! What has worked for me are Pampers cruisers 2 sizes up (I only tried these b/c I had them already for my older son and gave it a try - no leaks). It is a bit easier for me b/c I already have to buy them for my toddler, but if all else fails, try Pampers Cruisers 2 sizes up. good luck!
My son is 18mos and 30lbs too = ) I still have him wearing a size 4 at night without any leaks. I use sams club generic brand regular diapers too so they're really nothing fancy. I had the same problem with the leaky situation and it drove me nuts getting up that early. Cut back on the fluids a couple hours before bed. My son usually goes to bed between 8 and 9 so starting around 6pm i cut off the juice. Juice, cut with lots of water, still tastes really good and he'll drink a lot more because it tastes good. So, after 6 i only offer him water. If he's thirsty he'll drink just enough, but won't overdo it because it doesn't taste as good as juice. On rare occasion (usually after grandparents/aunts give more juice than allowed) he may wake up earlier than usual because he's soggier than usual, but i just go in, don't say a thing, change his diaper, and put his butt back to bed! I'm prego again and I need my sleep! Good luck... as we closer to potty training our boys you'll want to find a better solution than just more effective diapers. Try just offering water for the last couple hours of the day.
We also use Huggies Overnights, one size bigger, but they weren't enough. They used to sell a Diaper Doubler (whichi s basically like a maxi pad for pee) but all the stores around us stopped selling it. I have no idea why as it was perfect. So we switched to Poise pads and would put that in the overnight diaper. Worked great although expensive.
Changing him in the night is EXACTLY the right answer and the only right answer. No child should have to stay in a wet diaper all night no matter if it's leaking or not. If you don't believe me, then buy a pack of adult diapers. Wet them in the sink and wear them. Try and go to sleep in those diapers.
If you don't normally get up in the night, then set a very quiet alarm next to your bed. Just do it. It's the kind and right and motherly thing to do.
It has been 10 years since I had to worry about this (my son is 13 years now), but since my brother and I both had bed wetting issues, I am sensitive to your situation. I would try cutting back his liquid intake earlier at night, say 2 hours, or let the last bottle/sippy cup be smaller volume. At 44, I still maintain reducing liquids after about 8 p.m.
Good luck!
I use Huggies Overnights as well. I started using them about 6-7 months ago. I buy them one size bigger than my son's regular diapers and have never had a problem. They work GREAT!
hi,
for some reason this has happened to us before for like a week or 2 and then, the issue goes away. weird! we use huggies night diapers, and they work very well for us. for those times when he has been soaking through them, i bought a set of g-diapers and i put those over his huggies. this way his pj's don't get wet. hopefully this will go away for you as it does for us...by magic! good luck!
My son is 22 months and 30 lbs. I have him in Air Biscuits Cloth Diapers - he can go from 8pm to 8am without a single leak. Not all cloth diapers can pull off that feat, but they do! They weight about 4 lbs when I finally take them off!!! hee hee!
:) Good luck!
We have had good luck with the Pampers Extra Protection diapers. GOod luck! :-)
I know you already have a lot of responses but I did want to add to keep an eye on Amazon.com for deals on Huggies Overnites. They are the only thing that keeps my son dry but they can be expensive (I too use coupons and get diapers at a fraction of the cost but HO can be tough to get on the cheap). Amazon just had a deal where you "subscribe and save" and get an extra 15% off and they put the HO on sale! I subscribed, waited for the item to ship, then cancelled my subscription. I got a HUGE box of HO for $15 shipped to my door. Just something to look for if you are going to stick with the HO.
I have always used Pampers with my kids and never had any problem. They can hold a LOT of liquid.
We had a similar problem and used a product called a diaper booster. It looks like a big maxi pad & you put it inside the diaper to increase absorbency. We also used a size larger diaper when our daughter slept. Both worked very well!
My 4-y-o son was having freakouts in the middle of the night (every night!) for the same reason. We found "underjams" gave us the best results, but recently our Walmart has stopped carrying them & I'm not sure if they're still being produced & can be purchased elsewhere or what. For now we've been using "white cloud" (off brand @ WM) & checking him a couple of hours after he goes to bed & changing him if he's wet. It's a pain, but better than waking the whole house at 3:00 with him howling and a bed full of pee. Best of luck!!
Huggies Overnights worked really well for my son. He is a huge drinker and therefore was a huge wetter. Oh get a size 6 instead of a 5.
I like the check him before you go to bed advice. My son was such a poor/light sleeper I walked on eggshells to keep him asleep.
HUGS!
