Overfeeding?

Hi there.
My daughter is 7 months old and weighs 22 lbs 15 oz and is 27 inches tall. She's always been "big" and in the 100th percentile for weight (and the 90th for height, so she looks pretty proportional) and sometimes I wonder if I'm feeding her too much. She's been mainly on formula but we supplemented with a friend's breast milk for the first 3 1/2 months of her life, because I couldn't nurse.

This is what her daily intake looks like:
(if she sleeps through the night, sometimes she wakes and is inconsolable and we give her 8 oz of formula)
7:30 cereal (1/4 cup, made with formula) and 1/2 container of fruit
8:30 6 oz formula
(nap from 9-9:45)
11:30 6 oz formula
12:30 1 container fruit or veggie (she's on gerber 2nd foods)
(nap from 1-3ish)
3:00 snack (either 2 oz of juice mixed with 2 oz water and some fruit puffs or a 6 oz bottle)
5:15 dinner--1/4 cup cereal, 1/2 container meat or veg, 1/2 container veg or fruit
6:15 8 oz bottle
(bedtime is usually around 6:30)

Can anyone give me any advice?? My pedi says she's healthy and will probably slim down once she starts being mobile (she does an army crawl currently and can get up on her hands and knees but gets "stuck") but I'm a little worried. I don't want to turn her into a glutton!

What can I do next?

it sounds like your doing a great job. knowing the difference between when your child wants to be held, played with, changed, etc. is important so as long as you're not sticking food in her mouth everytime she makes a sound I'm sure you're not teaching her to become gluttonous. and once she starts walking she will thin out. babies burn lots of energy when they start walking, so be ready! don't be worried, just continue to teach her good eating habits as she gets older and she'll be fine.

Sounds like you are doing a nice job at keeping your baby happy and healthy. It doesnt sound like you are feeding too much at all. My second son was 10 pounds at birth and he hasnt stopped growing at 2 1/2! Have fun!

Hi. I have 2 boys and I thought my first was big until I had my baby. At Max's last check up when he was 4 months old, he was 27 inches and 21 pounds, on breast milk alone. She is fine and you are feeding her fine. I wish my baby would start to eat some solids. They say that as long as there height is proportional to there weight then they are not overweight. You are doing awsome and I bet she is a cutie.

Hi H.,
I have a little well not so little girl she is 3 years of age now. She was born 8lbs 9oz just unde 23inches long. right now she is 40lbs just over three feet tall in a size 5 clothing and a 11 shoe. 107% for her height and 103% for her weight. and just like your little one she was about the same sizes and weight at that age. She is by no means fat since she is tall so your ped. was correct. Your feedings are right on target. Babies only eat when there hungry. I looked back at my little grils baby book and she was eatting about the same amount your feeding your little angel. YOUR DOING GREAT MOMMY KEEP IT UP. Good luck with your education and your wonderful relationship. kindly B.

All of my sisters kids were the same way when they were little. All were breastfed and all very stocky. My niece is almost 6 and is very tall(takes after me because my sister and BIL are short). My oldest nephew is short (we call him a hobbitt)but is has thined out. My youngest nephew is just starting to get mobile and has started to thin out a little.

It sounds like you aren't doing anything wrong. I would keep up the great work you are doing. Your daughter sounds wonderful and healthy to me.

You are doing fine do not worry. I have a 12 month old son. When he was born he was 9lbs 7oz and 21 1/2 inches long. I was giving 8 oz by the first month. As long as she gains weight and height consistintly she will be fine. He has been in the 90 and up percentile since he was born and still is. He is 24lbs and 31 1/2 inches tall. My older son was always in the 90-100 percent, but now he is 7 years old 38 pounds and 49 inches tall. Do you know how difficult it is to find pants for him. I am getting a headache just thinking about it.

My son is walking he started about 9 1/2 months and he seems to eat more, but as long as your ped says it is fine then do not worry. Trust me if your ped. sees a problem he will tell you.

Enjoy the beautiful addition to your family and good luck with your masters.
