The Center for Disease Control has a BMI calculator on their website for children and teens. You will need to know the height and birthday of the child). I've copied it below for you. Good luck!

Does anyone know if 84 pounds is over weight for a 8 yo boy?

How does he look? My daughter is 8 and 90lbs. Which I know sounds huge but she is not fat. She is super tall and solid. Just depends. I think you would know if he was overweight. It doesn't all depend on the number.
Weight isn't the only factor in determining correct age. Yes, 84 lbs can be a good weight for an 8 year old if their height is in proportion.
I found this BMI (Body Mass Index) calculator for kids.
Enter the age, sex, height and weight for a BMI number.
I'm going to check this with my son's info to see what it says.
Hope it works for you.

***Hey this was pretty cool. It shows my son's percentile for other boys his age and says that he is at a healthy weight.
Check it out.
not only is height needed, but body frame size....too!
& as a heads-up, my son is 14 & weighs 140-150....it varies, depending on his activity level. (140lb when on track team & hiking with Scouts; 150 when sedentary during the winter.) He is 5'5". His tummy is soft, but without rolls. His feet are humongous.....he wears a size 12-13!!! AND his hands are HUGE, massive fingers.....not at all pudgy! His shoulders are broad, very brawny......& his thigh muscles are massive!
His frame says it all! My husband is 5'9", my older son is 5'10" .....we all believe that our youngest will be the tallest! It's kinda like with a puppy....big paws means big dog!
84 sounds pretty big... I'd have to know how tall he is I suppose. Does he look fat to you? It's usually pretty easy to notice.
It is hard to say without knowing his height. What does your doctor say? My son is turning 7 in Dec and weights 38 pounds, but he is on the small side and is very thin.
what is the height ... you need to do a bmi calculator
It all depends on his height, you can't just go by weight and age alone.
google a percentile calculator. It will give you a more accurate idea of his bmi based on height and weight. Also take into consideration the size of his bones and how muscular he is. Those will make him heavier but not necessarily in an unhealthy way.
If you're looking for a quick answer, the BMI calculators are the right way to go. If you want more information, the CDC website has the growth charts that pediatricians use (the ones that have the percentiles for age and size):
http://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/cdc_charts.htm
I like this site because it has lots of different versions depending on what question I'm trying to answer. If you click on "clinical growth charts" you will see all the choices. The boys "weight for stature" chart will give you an idea of how his weight compares to other boys of the same height (which is more relevant than his age). You can check out "weight for age" and "height for age" to see what his doctor would tell him at his next check-up...
I think it really depends on his height, build and genes! My 7yo who will be 8 next month is only 51 lbs but he is one of the smallest boys in his 2nd grade class. While my 2yo who will be 3 in dec is already 42 lbs and almost as tall as his brother! They have different biological fathers but they are both on a good growing curve for themselves. Overweight is a hard term to define in children!
bone structure has a lot to do with it.
I think you have to really add his height into the equation to find that out. Check his BMI (body mass index) instead of his overall weight. They have free BMI calculators online.
As many others have already said, alot depends on his height and build. On the "charts" at 84 pound he would be above the 95th percentile for his weight (the average (50th percentile) falls right at 65 pounds). If you think that he is overweight or is beginning to be - talk to your pediatrician. HOWEVER, don't just go by the numbers. My son is 4 years old and weighs 53 pounds - HUGE right? NO - he's actually considered UNDERWEIGHT by our pediatrician. HOW you ask?!?!??! Well, he's also 48 inches tall!!!! He's off the charts (above the 95th percentile) in BOTH height AND weight. You definitely have to take BOTH factors into consideration. : )
Good Luck
