My daughter is 9 yrs old and has ADHD with impulse control. She is medicated which has helped so much with her behavior. Over the past couple weeks though she has been crazy, over emotional. She burts into tears and hysterics when she is asked to brush her hair again because she didn't do a good job in the first place. This morning I told her she needed to go eat breakfast and she told me she hated me and hated her life. She is starting puberty (getting little breast buds, her hips are spreading and she's getting a few pimples) and I am not sure if this is partly hormonal or what. I am at a total loss as to what to do. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

Ugh...hormones! Doesn't it seem like it starts so much sooner now? I do not have any memories of being such a dram queen at such a young age. I am right there with you, my daughter is 10 will be 11 in October and she cries so easily. She has not told me she hates me yet, but she has said she hates her brothers...I try to give her space, let her clam down then talk to her about it when she is calm. We have played around with bedtime, I have taken to giving her More time in the morning to get ready and lots of times I encourage her to start preparing for the school day the night before to avoid AM drama.
Now is a great time to start her on healthy habits...washing her face after strenuous physical activity, washing her face before bedtime. They make some really mild acne stuff, Neutrogena is a good brand.

It very well could just be puberty, but it wouldn't hurt to run this by her pediatrician's office for feedback. Keep in mind, too, that kids with ADHD tend to be quite dramatic so the theatrics in the morning before the medication has kicked in isn't too uncommon.

Do you think the meds could have an effect? A friend of mine has a daughter with ADD. She's been trying different meds to see what works. With one of them she said her daughter was very jittery and emotional. Just a thought...

My daughter is 9 also with the exact same issues and I'm wondering the same thing. Alot of girls these days do hit puberty early. Remember when we were around that age and we hit puberty. I was 13 when i started my period and developed. It's gonna be rough but hang in there I know I'm not ready for it but I'm preparing myself lol.

So glad to hear im no the only one going through this. Whe I saw the overemotional part in the subject line,...i wondered if ADD was in the picture. My daughter is ADD. She turned 9 in March and within a week we had a few hairs under the arms and we had to start shaving and and we also were buying bras. She to is also very tenderhearted and loving and emotional. Its part of the disorder from all i have read. Luckily, our pediatrician also speacializes in ADD/ADHD and that has helped alot. Grace also has trouble making friends/socially immature. She hasnt "hated" me or her life yet. But she does say I take her sisters side more often when they have an argument. I could go on and on. Its just so great to know Im not the only one going through this and im NOT crazy. Grace is dependent instead of like her sisters who are very independent. Have you had any problem with O.C.D. yet.? We have & oh boy! Feel free to email me. ____@____.com a relief to find someone else...you have no idea how lonely this adventure has been.

I have a son with ADHD; he's also pretty emotional, but it calmed down when they found the right medication- he can't take Ritalin or Adderall, those both make it worse, and Vynase was the absolute worst for him- the only thing that doesn't mess with his mood is Celexa. I've also got a 10 year old on Celexa- we didn't even try the other stuff with her, we didn't want to risk it...She handles it pretty well but, these days, she is getting a little more sensitive, and I think she's also starting to deal with the puberty hormones. You might talk to the Dr., just in case...the different meds can have very different effects on people- I used to take Adderall for my own adult ADD, and didn't have any problems but, Ritalin didn't work for me- they're all very different & it could very likely be a combination of hormones & drugs...I wish you & your daughter the very best, good luck!
