Outdoor Sandbox Storage??

Ok, it is almost time to clean up the summer toys in the backyard and my question is about our sandbox. We have a pretty large Little Tikes tugboat shaped sandbox with a lid and this is the first year we have had one so I am unsure of what to do with it in the winter. Do I leave it out there all winter with the sand in it or do I empty out the sand and store it in our basement? I do have room in our basement so that is an option, but I just wanted to know what other people do with these larger sized sandboxes...thanks everyone for reading and to those of you who will respond!

What can I do next?

I love Karen B's idea for using it inside. Thanks, Karen!! I never would have thought of something like that!

I bungee cord my lid on and leave it all winter. We get occasional bees hiding in there (that happens all summer too) but no other bugs.

I empty mine (same sailboat) and put it downstairs with the plastic balls in it for the winter. You can get 100 balls for about $10 at walmart.

We put a brick on top of ours and left it outside. It was fine this spring- no water or yucky stuff got in. I plan to do the same again this year.

My daughter loves her sand box so we store the sand in 5 gallon buckets in the shed for the winter and put the sandbox in her toyroom in the basement and fill it with rice, macaroni noodles and beans. She LOVES being able to play with it inside and it's easy to shot-vac up any spills.

J.,
Although my kids are too big for a sandbox anymore, my sis in law has an in home daycare. She puts a block on top plus adds some duct tape around the edges for some added protection...
good luck

I plan on dumping mine and getting new sand next year. Mine has a cover so no animals get in, but bugs do. I think I will wait till winter and do the brick on top, mostly cause I don't have anywere to put it inside.

Hi J.! We have the same sandbox. We have left it outside in the winter for the past 3 years and we have not had any problems. The tugboat is still intact and has not cracked.
