Other Mother's Who Had to File for Child Support?

I'm so confused. I just have questions for someone who has already been through the legal system when the father is out-of-state. He is in Florida. The other detail is that he is self-employed and has bought three franchise insurance company offices and I have seen how he spends his money (VERY lavishly-travelling, jewelry, he has a house in Colombia for goodness sakes!) I want to know, do I have to attend hearings & such? Will he have to fly here to attend? I have plenty of questions about this. Is anyone available to share some information? I think I'm ready to go to the family court system.
My issue originally was that I didn't want to upset my ex, but now I'm realizing it's the baby's welfare that is being ignored if I don't just take him to court on this issue.
Thanks ladies!

So What Happened?

I have read your replies so far and YOU ROCK! Off to bed but will get back to you tomorrow and heed your advice(s) on Monday as far as making those phone calls. THANKS A BUNCH for your care & concern about my question. It's SO nice to know someone is listening (someone who speaks grown-up talk).
Xo!

It takes 2 to have a child and your ex is responsible for support. If you don't need the money now, you can put it away in a college or emergency fund for your child.
As for the court system, it is best to attend whatever hearings they ask you to so you can understand what is going on. Take a book and a bottle of water because you will be sitting for a long time. Write down all your questions because when it is your turn, they will try to rush you in and out. I would highly suggest that you keep a notebook with all your paperwork as well as records of all your phone conversations with dates and names of persons spoken to. Unfortunately, records with the court seem to have a way of disappearing, so make sure you keep records to save yourself a lot of aggrevation.

It is every child's right to be supported by both parents, if your ex is not helping to support his child, then you should go to the courts. I have been through the system and I didn't show up in court, but they said it is better if you do so you have some say about what goes on. The court will have you and your ex each fill out income/expense declarations and then determine how much he should pay. He may try to get the amount lowered, if you are there you can speak on behalf or yourself and your child. Also, if the court decides on an amount and you need more, you can make a request for an increase to your child support. If he is not paying you now, you have nothing to lose by taking him to court because he should be paying child support.

R.,
I have had to go thru the court system to get child support set with my ex. He is still not willing to pay the support to my 2 boys (I have 3 kids but my daughter is with my now hubby). I would suggest going through Dept of Child Support Services (DCSS). All you have to do is call them and open a case and fill out some paper work. Here is the number: ###-###-#### (San Diego) or you can go to www.sandiegochildsupport.com and get contact info there. They are very helpful but I am warning you now, you may be on the phone on hold for a while!!! I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to email me back.
Thanks,
R. M
