Hi, Mamas!
I am a home daycare provider, and it's okay, but I don't really enjoy it. I don't get to do the things I want to do with my kids, and I feel like they're being shortchanged. Also, the reason I decided to do home daycare was to stay home with my children, but I find that they get a lot less attention than I would like because I'm always tending to other children. Now, I'm fond of my daycare kids, and I do all sorts of fun things with them, but I just don't like that grind of having extra small children around ALL THE TIME very much. I was much happier staying at home with just my kids.
So here's my question: what can I do to make more money from home that isn't home daycare? I don't want to sell anything (like Avon, Arbonne, Advocare, whatever), and I don't have much money to invest in starting a business. I have excellent public speaking and communication skills (that's what my degree is in), and I am a fairly good writer (though you can't tell it here, lol). Are there any legitimate, work from home, or maybe freelance opportunities out there? We have pared down our budget as much as humanly possible, but we still need some extra income to pay down debt. Once our debt is completely paid off, then I won't have to have an income.

Oh, and just FYI: My hubby said he would let me stay home and work an extra job to pay down debt, but then we'd never see him! He is WONDERFUL with children, housework, everything!

I am in the same situation. My husband even offered to get a part time job as well. I will be keeping an eye on this one....
I would suggest (because it is what I am in the process of doing), switch your all-day day care to a 4 and 5 year old preschool program. You can do 2 day a week and 3 day a week option and only do it from 9-12. You already have your license so you wouldn't need to do anything except advertise. 2 day a week programs in CA are around 165 a month and 3 day a week around 260 a month... base it around your state curriculum and emphasize that this is a pre-k not a daycare. It is actually hard to find preschools that are not either a. Commercial run and very expensive with long waiting lists OR b. Actually just daycares with infants and toddlers running around (not ideal for learning). We converted half of our garage for my "classroom" and I am in the process of getting my license :) So just a thought...9 to 12 is MUCH less time, even with lesson plans etc. and plus you don't have to do diapers and stuff that way either :)
I think Nancy is on to something - I was going to suggest tutoring after school. There might be high school kids who need help writing term papers, or grade school kids who need a little extra math help. My mom was a teacher for years, and she would tutor kids after school. She would charge $20-30/hour, and that was years ago.

I would hone on on my strengths which you said are public speaking, communications, writing. You could help a lot of children and students as a private tutor.

What about freelancer as a trainer or seminar presenter?
You have a degree, excellent public speaking and communication skills and live in a good sized town. Have you thought of teaching at the community college or community ed classes? You could teach evening or weekend classes when your DH is home to watch the kids, and do paperwork during the day at home. There are also online classes through some community colleges. Many colleges are packed right now because people are going back to school while they are unemployed. Perhaps you can help them improve their communication skills.

I looked and looked and looked for something that I would enjoy doing, that I could manage from home and that would actually work and I would make money. It took me many years to find it but I finally did. It may or may not be for you but it doesn't hurt to look. I don't convince anyone but I can educate you on some of the things I looked at that may help your search for the right thing.
