Has anybody used the Ortho Evra birth control patch? If so, does it work well? Any side affects?

I would NOT recommend the patch! I used the Ortho Evra patch about 3ish years ago and I really liked it at first. Then it started to give me a rash where I put it and it didn't stick very well towards the end of the week. However, after I had been using it for about 10 months I started bleeding extremely heavily. I would leak through a super tampon in about 2 hours. This continued for about 4 days when I finally saw my docter and she took me off of it immediatly.A couple of years later the study was released saying that Ortho Evra has 60% more estrogen than other forms of birth control. Also, after I went off the patch in October I went on the pill in November. On the pill(ovcon) I got pregnant at the beginning of february. I don't know if it had anything to do with being on the patch shortly before or if it was simply a problem with the pill. My sister was also on the patch and she went off of it after gaining about 20 pounds and suffering through extreme headaches.
I see from your "about me" you are expecting a baby in August (congratulations!) so I assume that you are looking into birth control for after the baby. I used the Nuvaring after I had my son (and finished nursing) and LOVED it. It is super easy to use and I had no side effects. Also my periods got really light after a few months.I would highly recommend it. My husband and I decided we wanted another baby and I went off the ring in October and I was pregnant in November. I'm due at the end of August!
Hi R., I would advise against the patch...I believe there are some lawsuits being filed against them right now...have you talked to your Dr. about what is right for you? If you smoke or have high blood pressure, you might want to stay away from patches and pills.
I have it before but try to be off of it long thati s how my little girl came alone.. i was off of it for 2 wks and she came i liked it i did not have any sideafcets like the tv show.... My name is R. and if you need anything else let me know ok...
I'm not on the birth control patch, but it is linked to several blood clots in women around the United States. The chance of getting one is higher if you smoke. There is also this risk involved with the pill, but I've read an article in the newspaper about a year ago from fatalities caused by blood clots from women that use the birth control patch and that this risk is greater than those using the pill. Trust me, you do not want a blood clot. Because I had one, I can no longer use any form of birth control that contains hormones (shots, patches, pills, etc...) Do alot of research before using it. Your life, health, and family are way to important.
Not sure about the ortho evra but i can reccomend the mirena 5 year iud. I have it and so does a lot of my friends and we all love it. Its the best thing ever made for birth control.
R., I used the patch for about 9 months and at first it was okay, but when I had my periods it was aweful!!! I have always had heavy cycles so I was kinda used to it, but it became rediculous!!! I was going through a super tampon every half hour for 3 days. Once I told my doctor, he took me off of the patch and put me on Lo-estrin 24 and it is wonderful!!! I have been on it for about a year. Also, there is something in the ortha patch that causes some kind of heart problems. I recieved something in the mail about a class action suit for people who used the patch. That was after I quit using it. So do a little research on the internet before you use it. Hope this helps, C.
I used to use it and i never got pregnant on it. I was on the patch for two years, and then right at the two year mark i had SEVERE skin rashes that bled and itched. But until then, it worked perfectly. I never got any clots or anything either, and my period came right when it was supposed to. The only problem i ever had was that it would stick to my jeans in the back if I wore a thong and it was on my back hip. Other than that, it was great! It stayed on just like they said it would. I reccomend it for anyone, especially over the nuva ring, which came off a few times while we were enflagrande. It looked like a game of ring toss gone wrong! But anyway, it's a good method.
That's the bc I'm on now. Except for the time I stopped using it and got pregnant, it worked well for two years. The only side effect I had when I first used it three years ago was I that I got nauseous.
Be careful with this one. Do some research. There was a lot of coverage as of late on the patch's release. Patches (birth control, pain patches (duragesic) etc. tend to have inconsistent releases in a wide range of patients and in different weather conditions. For example, it is believed that they are not as reliable in heavier women/men because the medication has to travel through more layers of fat. Also, heat often affects the absorption rate, almost doubling the rate of medication available to the body by that of other products. This can have deadly results in some patients (especially with the fentanyl/duragesic) when exposed to heat from weather, hot shower, sauna etc.
There is a newer product Nuvaring that is out. Looks really interesting and side effects are quite low. Ask you doctor.
I used it and had breakthrough bleeding. Not to mention that the adhesive itched something fierce and left red marks on my skin when I took it off - I guess I must have been allergic to the adhesive.
Yes, I have used the patch and I got pregnant while using it. I would say I prefer the pill.
I did use it with few side effects (although, I found the cramping around my period to be MUCH more intense). I personally prefer and use Nueva Ring.... it has been a miracle for me... I am totally regular, NO cramping, not pregnant, and I only have to change it out 1 a month!
Talk to your doctor about it; it rocks!!
