Hello,
So I am a person of organization - I like to be organized :-) I have a shelf in the fridge for my son's baby food ~ but it just doesn't stay organized. I always have fruits on one side, veggies on the other and meat dinners in the middle. But I am not feeling like it stays organized enough, and it's hard to see the variety of fruits, veggies etc. Anybody have any great tips on how to keep that shelf organized? I have thought about making signs of some sort but I don't always have the same choices. Not sure exactly what will be just right for the organized person I like to be :-) Any great ideas from you fabulous Mom's??

What can I do next?

Hi C.,
I'm another organized freak. I do use plastic baskets. You can label them in front "meat", "fruit", "veggie". When you need something you just pull out the whole basket and you can easy see what is in it. I do get my baskets from dollar stores and I do change them every 6 months. Good luck!

YAHOO Girly! You have too much free time.
About the food jars though, they don't need to be cooled until opened, then you only want to store them for 24-48 hours and toss them. Are these all fresh? Maybe you should just make it as you go?
Another idea though, write the contents on the lid if you can't see the label.
But have no fear. Soon enough your son will rearrange your fridge for you =)

Lisa's response made me think...why not a lazy susan? BTW, your request made me laugh...I too am (what I considered to be) an organized person but I have not taken it that far...you should definetley get going on any other projects you have waiting in the wings before that sweet lil' son of yours becomes mobile:)

I have a couple of ideas for you but I first just have to say I've never been able to be as organized as it sounds like you are. In my younger years I wanted to be organized. Now that I'm older, I'm retired and my daughter is grown I've discovered that there are so many more things that I'd like to do instead of keeping an "organized" house. I am determined to experience the life with my grandchildren that I missed when raising my daughter. Watching a special movie with my grandchildren is a whole lot more satisfying than even cleaning out my refrigerator.

Here are some organizing ideas. What kind of containers are they in? If they're sturdy like a jar or refrigerator box you might be able to put a sturdy strip of cardboard in between each
category ie: between fruits, meats, veggies.

Another idea is to either use small boxes with low sides or purchase organizing boxes and have a box for each category. With low sides you can more easily see what is in each box/tray. You can even take the box/tray out to look inside or to put more inside.

Are you making your own baby food which has to be refrigerated? Or putting the commercial jars and boxes in the refrigerator? If the food is sealed you can keep it in the cupboard, again using a small low sided box and tray to keep them organized.

I did enjoy keeping house and a certain amount of order and I've gone to far in the other direction now so I'm working on finding a middle ground. In the meantime I feel especially blessed when I spend time with my grandchildren.

Maybe you could use the shelves on the door? That way you could see everything and have easy access!

You could put a lazy susan in your fridge (if you can find one that fits). That way you could spin it around to see everything. I've done that with all of our sauces, etc. S.

I think using the door to the refrigerator is a good idea. People tend to overlook the door because it usually holds items that are not used several times a day or every day. Usually these shelves adjust so maybe you could get a good fit.

Perhaps some sort of food rotation by color of food? That way you can assure a good dose of all the necessary nutrients.

I work in a nursing home kitchen. We keep the juices organized on a tray that slides off the shelf. They stay in their rows and it's easy to take out to get what you need. My boys are older and now nothing stays organized. Enjoy it while you can! Also, if you are putting leftovers in the fridge, mark the lid with a sharpie pen to show what date it was put in. Keeps the question out of "how long has this been in here".
