I have to agree with the Vinegar advice. I use that in my home. It's cheap and smells wonderful. It's amazing how many thing it will clean up.
I'm in the process of trying to make a switch to all organic / natural / nontoxic cleaning products for my home. Our home contains a preschooler, an infant and 2 kitties in addition to my hubby & myself. Our downstairs is wood laminate, and upstairs is carpet. I had been using Swiffer wet cleaning cloths on the laminate & Woolite Oxy carpet cleaner when needed to spot clean. (Even if we don't have spills the cats inevitably cough up a hairball or two on occasion - fun stuff like that...) Anyone know of more natural alternatives for either of those? I haven't found anything yet, but I've only looked at Target & Kroger so far. If it isn't something homemade I would definitely prefer something that can be bought either at a retail store or online without signing up for any type of membership or making a minimum purchase. Thanks mamasource moms! :)

I have a friend who is a sponsor for a company called Melaleuca. She does not have anyone sign up. She just lets you call her and place your order under her. I LOVE thier products!!! I use many of them. I so recommend them. If you need any of her info, let me know and I will get it to you!!!

I have gone totally green/organic also. What I use on my carpet is a simple steam cleaner, w/ no cleaning solution, just the steam, and that has cleaned all of our kid and pet stains. You can buy one or rent one from Kroger.
A good resource is the book "Gorgeously Green". It has great recipes for homemade cleaners, which are simple to make, inexpensive, and work very well. You do NOT have to buy organic cleaners. Although I really like the Mrs. Meyer's products and some 7th Generation products, you'll spend ALOT more money buying them than if you make your own. You can use essential oils to scent them however you want.
my sister used Windex for her carpet cleaner... to spot clean.. but when I had carpet I read on line to just use vinegar and water that it would take out all the smells and give a clean smell... I have used it also on different things and in different rooms does really well in the bathroom and baking soda for cleaner.. don't mix together unless cleaning out a drain... hahaha
Don't waste your money on bottles of organic cleaner at the store or online.
USE white VINEGAR INSTEAD.
Vinegar is a natural disinfectant, cleaner, deoderizer. You mix it with water to use for carpet cleaning and mopping. Add it to your laundry. Mix with water in a spray bottle for cleaning bathrooms, kitchens, etc. You can even get a "cookbook" that is ways to use vinegar as a household cleaner.
After hurricane Ike soaked all of our clothes, quilts, sheets, towels, etc. I took them all to my parents house, washed them with detergent, a bit of oxiclean, and vinegar. Everything came out clean, smelling fresh, and ready to go. The only clothing we lost were ones that had faded on each other (i.e. my white sweater that was hanging next to the red one now has a slightly pink hue on the back).
I also use Arm N Hammer detergent for our clothes, have for years.
Oh, and for pet urine, hairballs, poop, pour the vinegar directly on the spot, put a towel over it, stand on it to soak up, they let it dry. It takes the smell out of the spot. You may have to do a little scrub after to get the stain out, if there is one.
First I want to say WAY TO GO! I think that it is great that you are going to go green for your home. I was suprised when I read all the informaiton they have about Toxins and chemicals and the effect that they have on ourselves and our loves ones.
I was just recently introduced to a company that has 100% Green, and Recycle friendly products. I know you are not interested in a membership. But just in case check out this site (at least for the information about Being Green in our homes) http://www.wowgreen.net/?ID=10646
Kitty litter will help pull up any wet spills or spit ups. Let it dry after it soaked everything up and then vaccuum it up. If it soaks up, but is too wet, then pick some up and add more kitty litter as not enough was put down first. Works great, but must be used soon after. Baking Soda sprinkled and then vaccuumed helps with any odors. Vinegar cleans and disinfects and won't harm the carpet, but spot try it to know for yourself. It also helps with odors.
I use the Bona systems on my hardwoods & tile. It has a mop with a cartridge that you pop in and spray out cleaner as you need it (like the Swiffer), but it's completely non-toxic (unlike the Swiffer). It's amazing! They make my floors shine like they're new. I bought my systems (the mop, cartridge, & removable microfiber cleaning pads) at Berings, but I've heard that you can find them at Bed, Bath, & Beyond and even at Costco sometimes. I've never seen them at either place, so I broke down and bought them at Bering's. The systems at Bering's are about $45, but I'm sure you can find them cheaper elsewhere...especially online.
i know of some great cleans that are safe and green you have to order off line. This company as been around over 50 years and no stinky smell are left behind I use it and I have 3 kids a husband and I just added a Dog in Dec. The dog was 12 weeks so you know he was not potty trained My house has yet to smell like urine or dog. This stuff is really great. if you like more info email me back

I use some of the organic stuff. Mainly i like to use vinegar and baking soda mixed in water. I use it alot. I have 4 children. ( ages 10, 8, 5, 8 months) I like to go the cheaper routes too. Like stuff from the dollar tree that says organic.
I like the Mrs. Meyers cleaning stuff from HEB, I reccomend the Basil- it smells FAB!
Hi B.,
I shop at a great on-line store that carries all the all-natural products you are looking for. I discovered this store while I was in search of a cure for my son's (who is four) eczema. I had tried so many other lotions and creams recommended by doctors and none of them really worked. I was just so tired of spending alot of money on products that didn't work or burned his skin. The lotion that this company carries is amazing. It not only healed my son's eczema, but I also have been using it on my hands, because I'd always had problems with them cracking and bleeding. My hands are now soft and smooth and I've never had the problem of dried, cracked hands since using the lotion. Today, I realize that alot of the health problems my family and I had been having in the past was due to the products we were using in our home and on our bodies. I have now converted my entire home to all organic, natural products and we are all feeling so much healthier and better. I would love to be able to help your family too. Let me know if you would like more information and I would be more than happy to help you.

check out this site. Essential Oils have changed my life!
I am a distributor for Young Living Essential Oils. We sell Thieves cleaner that is mad from 100% pure grad essential oils. I use it to clean my laminate flooring, tile and carpet. I also use it in my diswasher and washing machine. We clean everything with this product. The back of the label basically says that if it is ingested... follow with water! Go to youngliving.org my distributor number is ###-###-####. Let me know if you need any help. my email is ____@____.com
I just purchased a steam mop that doesn't use any cleaning product at all, is safe on all types of floors (linoleum, tile or hardwood, and gives a deep down clean with a quick drying time and no harsh chemicals...
The mop is a bit expensive, but it uses pads that can be thrown in the washer and cleaned then reused and the no harsh chemicals with a deep clean was a big moticator for me!
Good Luck!!! ;-)
I get most of cleaning stuff from www.drugstore.com in the green and natural section. Some of the products have started showing up on HEB (hewitt) shelves.
I would highly recommend regular white vinegar. You can mix it with 1/2 spray bottle of water. Saturate the area then scrub/blot with a cloth. You can also use baking soda as a scouring powder. The vinegar can also be used to clean glass & stainless. If you want an antibacterial add some Tea Tree Oil to the spray bottle & shake before use. Try looking us Homemade cleaning products in a web search. You can make safer and cheaper cleaning products yourself.
Vinegar and water works like a charm! We have 2 cats, so we have the hairball issues, plus the 2 kids and the stains come right up with that and it won't bleach the carpet. It is also safe and a natural product. Half vinegar, half water and you're all set!
Hey B.,
I would be really excited to share with you where I get my products. I shop at an online store where the products are all naturally based (no bad chemicals what so ever), and they are even less exspensive than Wal-Mart brands. I have a little guy who is going to be 2 on Tuesday (can't believe it), and another one that is due in April. I wanted safe products in my home as well. Visit my web site:
