Organic/non-toxic Insect Repellent

I'm looking for some safe alternatives to the chemical-laden insect repellents found in most stores. Our family is going to Nebraska soon, and I would like this trip to be bug-free--especially from mosquitoes. We will be going to the creek, and I would like my 5-year-old and 1-year-old to be protected. In addition, I have extremely sensitive skin and when I get a bite, it swells, hurts, itches like crazy, and looks like a huge ugly bruise that lasts for months and months; my husband has no reactions (lucky guy). The last time we went to Nebraska, I came home with several bites all over my legs. I am going to take garlic pills, but I don't want to give them to my kids. Any other suggestions? Thank you for your help!

Hi Y. C: where I come from we have a lot of this too. unluckily, we get bitten. this is to let you know what we do then. we pinch any 3 herbs or flowering plants, cutting about a tip of the finger sized amount of a leaf that seems juicy Geraniums elc,... grind it to a pulp and apply it to the swollen bump. it goes away in minutes see if you are bitten, it will work for you. experiment with ferns, flowers, etc... this works for babies and up to old age people... best of luck to you.

Couple of natural pointers.

Don't eat bananas, they attract bugs.

Eat citrus - the orange peel is best - zest it and put it in your morning nutrition shake.

I use this body cream as a repelent http://liveitdontdiet.isagenix.com/us/en/uh_handbodycream... it has 5 types of vitamn C. I have been using it for 3 years on me and my kids. My friends use it on babies because it is natural. Not only keeps the bugs off by keeps your skin hydrated in the sun. It is really cool.

Go to Henrys or Mother's Market. They have several to choose from that are natural bug repelents, some actually smell good. :)

I recently picked up some organic, family-friendly mosquito repellent (2 types) at Walmart (it was in Virginia, but I bet they would have it here). We used the one called HOMS Bite Blocker insect repellent Family Safe, Organic, Deet Free and didn't get any bites while camping for three days. It comes in about a 5 inch long tube with a cap and is on a cardboard backing. It sprays on.
