Organic Milk

Actually, organic milk lasts much longer than regular un-organic milk. It smells exactly like milk when good and when bad. You will know!!

Kudos for choosing organic. Most people don't realize that buying organic doesn't mean that you are (as someone stated) paying for the cow to eat better grains.....it is a whole array of benefits and purity. No growth hormones...better living conditions, better food, less chemicals...on and on.

Anyone who has researched organic options knows that everything that cow eats or endures, becomes part of the "food" or "milk" he produces. If he eats contaminated grains, you will get a contaminated by-product....milk laced with pesticides and chemicals. If the cow receives growth hormones and antibiotics...guess what is in the milk and meat he provides? Yep, you guessed it.

I can tell you that organic milk tastes different to me since I was raised on regular whole milk....but I'm not sure about the smell since we don't use regular milk and haven't in forever. I"m with everyone else, taste it or go by the texture...chunky...um, pitch it, lol.

But, it really does last very long so it is possible you tossed a good gallon.

I never noticed a different smell, but I've been drinking it so long I wouldn't notice. Like one of the other mom's said, go by taste, not smell. I don't care for the taste of regular milk. It's too watery and organic tastes better and the shelf like is so much better. However, there are 3 brands that I only buy. I've noticed that the Whole Foods label and the organic milk from BJ's have gone bad on me quickly plus the taste isn't as good. You pay more for organic but the taste is so much better!!!

I think you probably did toss good milk. It does seem different to me too. Try Horizon Milk in the small single servings. They last forever.....

Oddly enough, organic milk lasts quite a bit longer than "normal" milk. Even though most organic things rot faster. And yes, it does taste different. As in much better! When we are traveling or have to buy plain mainstream milk in an emergency, the kids don't like it and I can taste the difference too. No harm throwing out the milk you thought smelled weird, but organic milk is sweeter and creamier tasting than the other milk.

Go by the taste, not by the smell. Taste a small amount, if it tastes okay, then it's okay.

Depending on the brand, organic milk usually has a longer shelf-life than regular milk due to the way it's pasteurized. Smell and taste some that is fresh so you will know next time if it is still good or not. I've had my kids on organic milk for years and they love it. Best of luck!

Yes, D., it is extremely likely that you DID toss out perfectly good organic milk. I'm a regular organic buyer and I know.

The reason it smells different is because mainstream milk contains rGBH, which is the bovine growth hormone injected into cows to make them artificially produce more milk en masse for bigger and quicker profits, the only problem with this is that it's been shown and documented to significantly contribute to early puberty in female humans (think B cup at age 10 - 12) and infertility in boys.

The FDA still lets it stay on the shelves because even though it does this to children it's cheap, and you have the organic option if you want it, so it's not your only choice of milk.

Organic milk does not smell like other milk. It definitely has a sweet smell that you don't expect with other milk. I too have done the same, smelled it, thought it was bad and threw it away. Did you smell it when you opened it? Until you get used to the difference in smell and taste try smelling it when you open it so you don't throw it away whle it's still good. It didn't take long for our kids to begin preferring the taste of organic milk over the non-organic milk.

Hi D., Frankly I don't get the whole "organic" thing. Truly organic milk is warm and fresh from the cow! I really think you are just paying for a cow to eat expensive grains while the milk is processed exactly like "regular" milk with a shorter shelf life and special price tag! Most dairy cows are fed & cared for very well otherwise they do not produce milk! I suggest you save your money and buy better quality veggies & teach you daughter how to enjoy them...a great habit that will last a lifetime. Best wishes.

Actually, I've found the shelf life of organic milk to be much longer . I constantly threw out conventional milk. Organic milk is usually ultra pasteruized and the dates are usually a month away. I would taste before throwing out.

Hmmm. Why don't you buy some more of the brand of milk you tossed and compare the smells yourself to see if they are similar. You should then be able to gauge what it should smell like fresh. Of course, I'm sure others' input will also put your mind at ease. Common sense comes in very handy as a mother. Tossing the alleged fresh milk (whether good or bad) was a good idea. Trusting your own instincts as a mother as you did will always serve you and your children well.
