Can someone tell me the difference btw organic milk and milk from cows that have not been given growth hormones?
It is also what they feed the animals that makes it organic. they are feed food with out pesticides added to it as well as not giving them growth hormones.
Well, that's the biggest difference as well as organic milk coming from cows that haven't been given antibiotics either. The feed the cows are given is organic as well with no pesticide exposure. Some farms actually let their cows feed on grass the way nature intended. To be certified organic, farms have to adhere to very stringent guidelines. They won't get a label of 'organic' without following them. I'm not sure that the amount of hormones farmers give their cows to increase the milk supply is even regulated. I think the antibiotics are, but I'm not sure how closely the farmers are actually monitored.
Just a quick aside...my 10yo son had what we called 'adult' type body odor. We asked the dr about it and she told us to try organic milk. We did and within a week his body odor was gone as well as a funky smell in his hair that we tried to get rid of for years. A couple of years later when things were really tight we decided to try the 'regular' milk again. Our 10yo daugther and 8 yo son got the body odor this time as well as our older son. We switched back immediately and it disappeared again. We've decided that we can cut back in other areas, but will remain with the organic milk, meat and eggs. It's just better for our children. Plus we think it tastes better!!

Here's the deal. On the large dairy farms, cows are given the bovine growth hormone to produce more milk... because unnatural demands are put onto the animals. Then because they are lactating so much, they get more infections, so the farmers need to give them more antibiotics. So when you drink that milk, you are drinking the growth hormone, and the antibiotics. These cows live only 3-5 years then die, but no one is admitting that the BGH could be the cause. With organic milk, you won't get any of that garbage. If you do anything organically, make it anything from cows... beef, butter, and milk. MIlk from cows given no growth hormones is just that. Growth hormones have raised concerned about potential health risks in humans (i.e. certain cancers).
Organic milk comes from certified organic farms with strict guidelines for being classified as such: no pesticides used on the food/grass given to the cows, low impact of the farming on the community, holistic care for the animals (not using antibiotics as a preventative health measure, as 70% of the farming antibiotics are), humane treatment of the animals, and no growth hormone use.
Buying organic milk seems like a small step, yet a choice which makes a HUGE impact on the earth and, quite possibly your health.

organic milk will be without hormones as is the non-hormone milk. but the organic will also mean that the food fed to cows will be pesticide free and non-GMO as well so you will have less tosinx added to the cos thru what they eat.
you may want to look into getting grass fed milk though as the best option. those cows are organic, and feed on grass and go out into the pastures to eat it! they actually grae which is what they normally should do. you might also want to find a local farm to get your milk.

I just took a nutrition class and learned that dairy cows are not alowd to be given growth hormones, only beef cows. I haven't done my own research into this, but that is what we learned in class.
