Organic Mattress for Big-girl Bed

I'm looking to buy an organic mattress for my 3 yo daughter's big-girl bed, but I'm overwhelmed by all the choices I've seen online. Natural latex, innerspring, organic cotton & wool... I can't figure out which would be a good option for her now and hopefully not need to be replaced over the next 15 years. I'm willing to pay more for a non-toxic mattress, but cost is definitely an issue. Any information, resources, or suggested websites are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I recall recently (less than 4 months ago) reading about organic mattress in two articles in the NY Times.

The first was for infant crib mattress: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/15/garden/15mattress.html?...

The second for regular adult mattress: What Lies Beneath? By JULIE SCELFO Published: January 15, 2009 (I could not seem to pull up the rest of this article... maybe your local library would have it).

When I did a word search for "organic mattress" at NYTimes.com, I also found this article "All-Natural Bedding: Counting On Sheep, Cotton and Even Milkweed ". This is not the one I was thinking of the two above are, but maybe it will help you.

Good luck.

Good morning A.

I can only speak about what I have but I know for sure that I would not trade the mattress' in that I bought for anything. We bought from the attached website and they are wonderful to work with and will help you figure out exactly what would be best for you.....

http://www.thenaturalbedstore.com/

We bought 2 queen size and my husband has been in them alot since we had baby number 3.... if you last 5 minutes when you lay down that is generous and you feel like a million bucks when you wake up!!! Best investment and the kids sleep like rocks!!

Hope this helps and I cannot say enough good things about the product and the company and GREAT customer service

A.,

Thank you for thinking green! I have a resource for you to help you sort out the differences. I am a Shaklee Independent Distributor and our owner's wife wrote a book called "Green Goes With Everything." In the book she discusses matresses and matress covers. I'm sure you can get a copy at the library. Look in the back of the book under furnature and under bedding/linens and under beds/mattresses in the Resouce Guide, she lists companies where you can purchase green items or who make green items.

If you have any questions, let me know.

We bought my son the Naturepedic No-Compromise Organic Cotton crib mattress and we really like it. No funny smells, pthalate free, foam free, naturally flame-resistant so there are no flame-retardant chemicals, and it's really well made. I looked into it a lot, did lots of research and even though some mattresses will be called organic, you have to be careful because a lot of them still have chemicals in them. I would not use latex- many people develop latex allergies with repeated exposure. Wool is also an allergen for some people, so that's another thing to consider. This is why we went with the organic cotton.

I ordered it from Amazon but looked on the naturepedic website for details before ordering. I also contacted their customer service to ask a few questions about the frame and the coils. They are heavy-duty and strong. Yes, it's pricy, but if you plan on having the same mattress all through childhood, it's really not that bad if you think of the price per year.

Hi A.,

Bob's Furniture in Stamford, CT has beds/mattresses for children. However, I'm not sure if they carry organic mattresses. I do suggest you check out their website at
www.mybobs.com and give them a call. They do carry allergy-free mattresses, but I don't know if that's the same. In addition to price, I'm assuming you're looking for quality as well. I'm recommending them because their furniture is top quality, yet the prices are affordable. I get all my furniture from them. Good luck,
