Organic and Natural Diet for My Epileptic Daughter

I could use some help. My daughter, who is now 8 years old, was diagonosed with epilepsy about 5 years ago. Although the medication is working during the day, she still has a lot of breakthrough seizures at night. In the research I have done, I have found many types of processed foods, and artificial ingredients that can trigger seizure activity. I am in the process of transforming our diet into an "all natural"one. Where I could use your help is the "how too." I need to find a place to shop that is affordable. I know that king soopers and safeway have a large selection of organic foods, but is there anywhere else? Also if anyone knows of some good, and simple recipes?
Thanks
L. P

Hi L.

You can try whole foods, Sunflower market or just farmers markets. Also I don't know if you would have the time, but you can start your own veggie, herb and fruit garden, not only is it more organic, you end up saving a bundle :-)
Good luck on your search I hope it works out for you

Sunflower market carries natural and organic food for a lot cheaper than Whole Foods. Also, try Vitamin Cottage. Whole foods store brand "365" is also a little more affordable. Good for you for doing this for your daughter!

In addition to vitamin cottage, whole foods and sunflower market, you might check out your local farmer's market for fresh, unprocessed, local food. Many, although not certified organic, do not use pesticides or herbicides. You can ask individual stands to find out more. There is one at Aspen Grove on Wednesdays, in Highlands Ranch City Center on Sundays, and Southwest Plaza on Saturdays, as well as many more in other areas of the city. You can often get naturally raised eggs, chicken and beef, and wild salmon in addition to fresh fruits and veggies.

Good luck, I think it is great you are doing this for your daughter.

Go to Sunflower Market. There are several throughout the metro area but we go to the ones on County Line and University and also on Yale and Colorado. They are WAY less expensive than Whole Foods but have many of the same products. We love going there!

Vitamin Cottage is also more affordable (and sells much more than vitamins) and there are a bunch of them all over the Metro area, including one in the King Soopers shopping center at University and Highlands Ranch Pkwy.

Good luck!

at the vitamin cottage, they also have a goods selection of books on this kind of thing, and a pretty knowledgeable staff that can make suggestions. they were really great and helpful when i was looking for some books on making organic babyfood.

they also have some great books about reducing the environmental pollution in your house (e.g. cleaning chemicals, shampoos, plastics, etc)
