Hands down, Dr. Brown's bottles are awesome. I really didn't try a whole bunch of different ones since reading about the Dr. Brown's and why they were different. However a friend had given me some Playtex bottles, which I ended up giving away because they were a pain. I also have one 9 oz., wide neck Avent bottle which we use on occasion. It tends to make a lot of noise though. Dr. Brown's are know to help with Gas and Colic. They have a special tube, which some people find too much work to wash. I think it's not a big deal and everyone that I have recommended Dr. Brown's to has enjoyed them too. In fact a friend of mine brought some to a cousin in Switzerland because she liked them so much.
Good luck!

I recommend the Avent bottles.. I used them with my daughter and I loved them.. They are supposed to reduce colic and they are really easy to clean.. I also tried the playtex bottles with the bags but I thought they were a pain, they were more messy.. Anyway I loved the Avent bottles, they were great..

I don't know if you meant for it to sound this way, but what I got out of your post is that you intend to give your baby pumped breastmilk, but not actually feed at the breast. If that's right, then good for you for at least pumping. That's what I did with my twins. They were born three months early, so they were fed with tubes down their throats at first, and then when those were removed, their mouths were still too small to latch onto my nipples so my kids never did get to actually feed at the breast. However, they did get breastmilk until they were a little over 7 months old. Since I don't have to worry about nipple confusion or milk flow speed, I use the generic Gerber bottles that you can buy in a three pack for $3.00 at WalMart. I tried the Dr. Brown's and the VentAire and all those other fancy ones, but my babies just didn't like them (which worked out in my favor money-wise). But like one of the other moms said... if you do plan on breast AND bottlefeeding, make sure to use the newborn flow nipples the whole time so that it's more like the breast.

Hi K.,

Since you are going to be pumping I recommend the bottles that come with the Medela pumps. You can pump, store (freeze), and feed all out of the same bottle and they are BPA free which most baby bottles are not. BPA is in clear hard plastics and acts as a hormone in the body. Not good for developing babies. Infact in CA it has been outlawed in baby products. My daughter also likes the slow flow orthodontic nipples that came with the bottles (and we tried several). In my opinion they aren't as slow as they could be but she like them. Hope this helps.

I used the Ventair bottles for both of my boys. They are easy to clean and very little bubbles for the baby.

Hello and congrats on your new baby.I also breastfed and my daughter wouldn't take a regular bottle. So the frist one I used is Frist Year wideneck bottles sold at Babies R Us.I love these because they are designed to be like the natural nipple and by daughter took them very easil.I also used Playtex Drop Ins. I like that the drop-in are alwyas clean. They again have a more natural design but the down falls are that replacing the liners cost extra money as opposed to bottles with out. Both are great bottles.

I pumped and bottle fed my son for a long time with success using avent bottles. The nipple has a wide base like a natural breast. Also, I used the newborn flow speed nipples the entire time so he would always have to work for it - just like on the breast. I think a lot of babies get nipple confusion because of the flow/speed of the bottle nipple being so much easier and faster than that of the breast.

good luck!

Hi K.,
I, along with a lot of other posters here, loved the Playtex Nurser System. I worked and breastfed for 6 months and these bottles were a lifesaver. My daughter went back and forth quite easily and never had any gas or colic problems. Even when we had to go to formula, the transition was smooth with no gas or colic problems. I used the Lansinoh freezer bags for storage, and those were wonderful as well.

I liked Avent & Dr. Brown. Avent pros: came with 4 parts - the nipple, ring, bottle & lid (easy to clean); practically leak-proof (if you knock them over, the milk doesn't leak out of the nipple); less air in baby's tummy -- cons: doesn't always fit in diaper bag bottle pockets. Dr. Brown pros: they fit on the Medela pump (pump right into the bottle); less air in baby's tummy; they fit into diaper bag pockets -- cons: 6 parts (more to take apart & clean). Good Luck with whatever you choose!

K.,
Congratulations!
I was very very lucky with my son who was able to nurse as well as take a bottle and I feel very strongly it was because we had the right combination of breast and bottle and I hope you will have the same luck.

This is what worked for us: 1. Medela Pump in Style Advanced Back Pack: it doubled as a purse for me and I was able to set it up on my desk at work, plug it into the wall and pump while I worked. Make sure you do not rely on the battery pack. It doesn't give the pump near enough power. I bought an extra AC power adaptor and kept one plugged in at work and one plugged in at my desk at home where I pumped at night and this way all I had to do was plug the pump in and no untangling the cord and crawling on the floor each time to plug it in. If you ever want any other tips, don't hesitate to ask me. Go to this link for the best prices ever: http://mybreastpump.com/

2. Hands Free flange holder called the Original Pumpin' Pal. Check out this link: http://www.pumpinpal.com/New_HTML/original_page.htm

This thing was awesome! It took some getting used to but then I don't know how I got anything done without it.

3. Bottles: I loved the Playtex Nurser and Drop-Ins System combined with the One Step® Breast Milk Storage Kit. Those are the exact product names. I really believe that this system is what enabled me to be able to nurse my son for so long. Here is why: the nipples are pretty close to the real thing. They are silicone so they clean easier, don't have a weird taste and keep bacteria like latex plus you can see through them easier to see how much milk is getting into baby. The clean up is much less hassle since you're only washing nipples and collars. The liners get tossed. You can use the Parent's Choice knock off liners, but make sure you squeeze them lightly once you fill them with milk to check for leaks. A couple of them busted on me, you just have to check first before putting the filled one in your cooler. If you get the One Step Storage kit, it comes with an adapter ring that fits the Medela flanges. These are great because you pump directly into them and then they go directly into the bottle nurser and there is not a drop wasted, spilled or missed. It has to be the most sanitary way. You warm the breast milk by dunking it into a warm cup of water. (Never microwave it)

All you need to get are 2 packages to have this complete system: 1.) the One Step® Breast Milk Storage Kit and 2.) The Premium Nurser Newborn Gift Set. These 2 packages will give you everything you'll need to store and feed your new baby. I sound like an advertisement now, but that's how much I really believe in these products.

Well, I wish you the best of luck. I pumped this way for 7 months and now I'm a SAHM and my son is going on 11 months and we're still nursing very successfully! I was a text book case for everything that could go wrong for breastfeeding since I had a C-section, so I am very very lucky and I think doing the research and getting the right products helped with that success.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. If I can help another mother to keep breastfeeding alive and popular, I will do it!

All the best!
M. & Lucian

I just had my baby in April and I have tried a few different bottles. So far I really like the Playtex Ventaire bottles. They have helped her a lot, in causing less gas. Also, they come in a wide nipple that may help in any kind of transition, if you are going to breastfeed some of the time. My friends used these bottles for the same reasons and had highly recommended them to me.

Avent all the way! They are not cheap, but worth every cent. They're made to reduce gas bubbles, and I really think they work. Avent also sells a pump you can attach the bottles to, but like I said, NOT cheap.

We used Avent bottles and even the baggies too. We had trouble using Dr. Brown's because of cleaning and high demanding hungry baby.

I have tried pretty much every kind of bottle they had out when my sons were born and they both like the avent bottle. I liked them to they were the only ones that i had that didnt crack or break when dropped, thrown or put in the dish washer. My friend has four kids and she also loves the avent bottles. Its also nice because the sippy cup lids fit on the bottles and the nipples fit on the sippy cups.

I used the Medela pump and pumped right into the Medela bottles. The bottles are small, but hold enough for a newborn, about 5 or 6 oz. Good luck!

Are you planning to nurse also?
I have a Medela Pump N Style-for sale actually, that I used for 4 months. I pumped and fed my daughter in bottles till she could figure out how to latch properly, then I nursed and pumped. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep up with her so I switched to formula at 5 months. With the advice of my Pediatrician, I was told to use the Platex drop in system for a couple reasons. They have been around forever-which says a lot about a company and the way the bottle is designed it helps prevent speech problems and teeth problems. The nipple is very similar to the breast also. I switched her to Avent when I stopped breastfeeding and pumping-more for the convience. It is hard to travel with the Playtex system. Avent is rated very high and is reasonably priced. I got caught up in the trend of what's best and it truly isn't the way to go. Stick to the basics is my opinion and nurse as long as you can.

i bought the dr brown bottles for my daughter and i was doing the same for a while as far as pumping and giving her the bottle. i like them since they do not allow a lot of air into their tummies and thus not causing as much spit up or colic. you can get them at walmart or at babies r us. babies r us has a wider selection than walmart.

Gerber makes an awesome bottle they are a larger than normal bottle and the nipple is more natural (like a woman's breast). And to top it off, they make a hand pump that fits on the bottle so you can pump your milk into the bottle and then save it. I used the hand pump and it really doesn't hurt like the other hand pumps. My daughter is now 19 months old and she still uses the bottles & Sippie cup tops. I call them a transition bottle you can pump the breast milk in the bottle, Use Formula if you choose and then when they get to "sippie cup" age they make tops for them that have handles and a soft tip sippie cup.

Congrats!

I used the Playtex Nursers w/drop ins (used the generic drop ins...less money) I really liked them but my son was a piggie and reached the 4oz and 8oz level pretty fast and since I wasn't BF it was hard to mix formula in them since they would over flow. I did pre-mix the bottles in something else but even then the full amt wouldn't fit in them. I switched to the ventair wides and really wish I had found them sooner! For our next one I will buy the smaller version (4oz) and use them the whole time. GL with whatever you decide.

Dr. Brown's bottles are amazing. The design helps reduce the amount of air the baby takes in. I didn't try any other bottles because these worked so well for my son. Best of luck!
