Opinions on Double Strollers

I have a 2.5 year-old son and just had a baby girl. I have been debating whether or not to get a double stroller. My son likes to walk, and is usually pretty good at holding my hand or onto his sister's stroller, but some trips (mall, Disneyland, aquarium) are too long for him to walk, or too hard to keep him corralled. I have read a lot of reviews of double strollers at Babies R Us.com, and it seems like they are all very heavy and bulky and hard to steer. We already have a full size Graco stroller and a good umbrella stroller, and I am wondering how useful other moms have found double strollers with a toddler.

What can I do next?

I have a Graco double stroller, at first I didnt want the side by side because I dont know how many times people have run into my feet and into the aisles with those. So I wanted a tandem, I think thats what its called.

But its been great, other than the steering, and it is hard to push. And the screws have fallen out. I had to buy a whole new canopy to get the screws. They dont replace the screws.

I am thinking of buying a double umbrella stroller now.

Good Morning M.,

I have a 3 yrs old and a 1 yr old and I researched everything about double strollers. I ended up buying a double jogger, tandum graco and a double umbrella stroller so I knew I would be covered wherever I went. In my opinion they were for the most part a waste of money except the umbrella stroller. I do use the jogger once in a while but like you my 3 yr old wants to walk so it was not worth what I had to pay. The umbrella one is light easy to manuever and both kids enjoy it. My oldest boy 7 can even push it. Hope this helps a little.

It really depends on what you would be using the double stroller for in the long run. I purchased a double stroller online through costco and I love it. I don't jog, but it has a swivle front wheel so you can take it anywhere. The brand is Schwinn, so it's a good one.

Hi M.

i have a 3 year old,and 10 month old. I wanted to get a double stroller, but hated the double wide ones; they seem so tough to steer, and most seemed too big and cumbersome, esp if second seat wasn't always being used. So I got the Phil and Ted E3. It can be used as a single stroller, an infant seat can fit on it until baby is old enough for seat, but the best thing is you can get and extra seat that just clips on the bottom. My oldest loves it. He can climb in and out as he wishes. If he is out, the seat is great for putting my bag in, adds no length or width, and is sooo easy to put on and off. It has big chunky wheels, is a smooth ride, easy to turn, and folds up pretty neatly; ie, does not take up all the space in my trunk. It is a little pricey, but I think it is worth every cent. Check it out.

Hope this helps...
L.

I have three boys of which two are toddlers. I have purchased both the side by side and the long double. I don't use the side by side although it is light weight, because it does not fit through doorways. I use my long double if I don't want my kids to run around in a department store etc.. I found the easiest thing to use was 2 umbrella strollers and stroller connectors that you can purchase at Babies R Us for about $10.00. The hooks connect easily and allow you to push two umbrella strollers together. You can remove them anytime you want to have just one stroller. I hope this helps. I spent over $600.00 in strollers trying to find the right one. I was able to use the umbrella for my youngest at about 4 months old. Good luck!

My 2nd DD is due in a few weeks so we haven't actually used our double stroller yet. However, I did buy one. My DD#1 will be almost 2 when Avery is born and I know I can't expect her to walk all the time. We purchased the Graco Quattro Tour Duo from BabiesRUs. I really like it from putting it together and test driving it. DD loves to sit in her seat in the front (and I've had her HATE other strollers). Some of the people who reviewed it said it's too big to fit in the back of an SUV and stuff but I think that's extreme. It folds up not much bigger than my regular Graco. It is heavy when it's folded up but I don't plan on carrying it around. It'll only be in and out of the car basically. It doesn't seem heavy when you're pushing it. Hope that helps!

They are bulky and heavy and hard to steer, but they sure do come in very handy. They are a bit expensive too, if you dont want to pay full price for it, i would go to Childrens Orchard, they always have fairly new and clean ones there. Good Luck!

Hi M.,
I have a 3 1/2 yo son and my daughter is 1 today :). We got a Joovie Sit N Stand stroller (from BRU). That way my son has the freedom to walk or to ride if he's tired or if I need him to sit if he's not behaving while we are out and about. It's worked wonders for us for the past year. It's a bit heavier than normal 'travel system' stollers, but not nearly as heavy as a conventional double stroller.

Hi, I liked the sit and stand stroller. Your son can sit or stand on the back...they are a little bit smaller and easier to maneuver than a full double stroller. Good luck!

Hi. We have the Joovy Caboose it's perfect. It's a Sit n' Stand stroller but the seat for the toddler actually has a seat belt too. I bought mine last year & the Sit n' Stand by DuoGlider I think is the company the seat didnt have a seat belt. So we went with the Joovy. It's perfect for Disney & such. It's just as heavy as the other stroller & its not hard to turn at all. It's is bigger though so I also keep an umbrella stroller in the car for smaller trips. Hope this helps.

I bought the Sit and Stand by Baby Trends at Babies R Us when I had my third child. That stroller saved my life. Originally I would "wear" my youngest in a sling but the middle one (two at the time) in the front seat and have my 4 year old stand on the back when we would go to places like Disneyland. Then the 4 year old could sort of come and go at will. Of course at the time their dad was still around so he could help with the oldest when he wanted to walk. I have used that stroller more than any single stroller I have ever had...and there have been several! There are connections for a carseat although I didn't use them because on the rare occasion I wasn't wearing the baby I found that her carseat strapped securly into the "stand" up area so my 2 year old could still sit in the front. I used this stroller with my fourth (and final) child as well. It was reasonably priced at about $150-175 if memory serves me well. It steers well and is nowhere near as bulky as the traditional double strollers. It folds easily with one hand. You would think I have out grown it's usefulness but to tell you the truth when we go shopping sometimes I'll still take it. My 4 & 6 year olds will take turns riding on the back...and it's good for discipline too...ya know the "if you touch one more thing, you'll have to sit in the stroller" is a pretty effective method with a four and six year old who don't want to look like babies!

Get a lightweight double!! I have a Combi that folds easily into an umbrella stroller. I love it! My kids are 4 and 6 and they still want to use it. Maclaren and Peg Perego also make them. You can find them at the used kids places occasionally.

I found that they are really bulky and hard to steer. Most of those places we go too and if I think we will be there too long and that my son won't want to walk the whole time, then there is usually a place to rent a double. Well, except for the aquarium. I don't believe they offer them there.

We bought a double stroller because I was all by myself during the day. I can say that I used it all the time for outings until my Youngest turned a year old. My 2, almost 3 year old, prefers walking now, so we use our single stroller more often. If you have a second person with you, to push a stroller on outings, all the time, I would suggest just stick with the singles. We used a full-size single & an umbrella stroller. The double just became a carrier for bags & packages after a while.

Hey M.,
I have a 2.5 year old and a 4 month old, and for kids at these ages, I think the Graco long double is perfect. For traveling cross country thru airports and long days when both kids may need to fall asleep for a while (like a full day at Disney) it works great because you can just put the baby right in it without the car seat and then BOTH seats can lean back for the kids to sleep.
Often I'll just use the click and go with the car seat and my toddler will walk, but for those long trips and big days out, the double is awesome.
Hope it helps!

M.,

Although I am not in the market for a double stroller, nor do I have one, I always take not of what's on the market so hopefully if the time comes, I won't have a ton of research to do... What about one of those strollers that has the seat for the baby and the ride along plate/seat in the back for your older one. The Right Start sells one that looks great. However, the last thing you probably want to do is buy another stroller so I've seen in the One Step Ahead Catalog you can just buy the attachment for the stand up plate. The one thing that I wonder about is how this affects the person pushing the stroller. With my current stroller, I already sometimes kick the wheels and the basket so I don't know how adding a plate on to the back for standing would work....
Just some thoughts!

Good Luck!

I would highly recommend it, I have a three year old and a one year old and i would not go anywhere without it, it's just much easier to carry everything for both kids and keep up with both of them. I think I got mine from target so you don't have to spend a whole lot on it.

When my second daughter was born, we started with a Joovy sit n stand type of stroller, it was aweful! My oldest daughter, 21 months at the time, could not sit on the toddler seat while we had the infant carrier in the front. I returned that stroller. Then I bought a Graco Duoglide. I liked it. It had lots of room for the infant carrier and my toddler. But when I would try to walk at an increased pace, like to exercise, or when I had to hold one child while pushing the stroller, I found it to be very difficult to manuver. So I broke down and bought a BOB Revolution. I LOVE IT! I bought it, thinking that I would just use it for exercising, but since I got it, I have not even taken the Graco out of the garage. You can push and turn the BOB with ONE HAND!

As far as do you need a double stroller? I would suggest one, because if your son ever got tired of walking around and you are carrying your infant because she is crying, nursing, etc. you are stuck unless you have a stroller to plop your toddler into. Plus, I find that my toddler will often "take off" running, so I make her sit in the stroller when she doesn't stay near. Now that both of my kids are toddlers, it is so nice to have a stroller for both of them. I do keep an unmbrella stroller in my car for those times when I know for sure that I'm only going for a short time and just need one of them confined.

Good luck! And I got my BOB off Ebay. It was used but in very good condition.

You could consider the Joovy Caboose. Your toddler can sit or stand on the back and get off easily. If you're going to the zoo a lot or somewhere hilly, you might consider a double jogger to have the handbrake. Babies R Us sells the Caboose so you can test it out. Good luck.
