Hey Mamas - this is another question in regards to starting a errand/concierge service- targeting busy new moms/parents - busy professionals and seniors. I am almost ready to open up shop, as I have been researching for quite some time. My past questions were answered with great ideas and a positive response to the idea. Thanks for all your input. Lastly, as a mom or busy professional or even looking for help for your aging parent, what services would you use from an errand service or like to use and how much would you pay per hour. All your ideas are appreciated
thanks

Dry-cleaning drop/pick
Package mailing
Grocery shopping
I wouldn't base it on a hourly basis, but perhaps per task...I dunno...maybe $5-7 for the easy ones (dry-cleaning & package) and $15-20 for grocery shopping (although, with that price it might be cheaper for me to order from Peapod delivery.)
Our longterm care policy pays up to $15 per hour(gas included) for errands, accompanying elderly to appointments, etc....
As to picking up medicines, every pharmacy I use allows the person to put a credit card on file or to be billed monthly. You should not pay out of your account.
I would pay you more per hour to visit my elderly relative who is nice to unknown people but mean to relatives including me. Companion care charges $15 per hour, but the person only gets $11 or less due to expenses.
My cousin did this years ago and did NOT base the cost per task.
Instead she & her friend had a flat rate.
I agree w/QueenoftheCastle to base the price on the errand.
Also, set hours for the business (ex. 8am-6pm) so you don't get calls at
5am to p/u medicine. Or late night calls for booze. :)
Back then she had to use her home phone so those early/late night calls were a nightmare. Now with cell phones you can turn the cell phone off.
Set up a website. Back then they dropped off flyers but I've heard people say they hate flyers. I think flyers on your windshield suck but maybe one
posted at school, library etc w/pre-approval, of course, would be good.
Get cheap business cards printed at Vista Print to start.
Good luck and be sure to post your results.
