If I were a computer that's what my screen would flash today.

I took my daughter to the farm today and it was crazy hot. Sure I stocked up on water and slathered on the sunscreen but guess what? When we left and were driving, I was handing her some water when I noticed she was able to lean forward easily. She then announced, "mommy you forgot to put my seatbelt on!"

I felt HORRIBLE. Yes, I have PMS and was obsessing over my class but that was no excuse for safety.

I pulled over and latched her in and apologized saying that mommy had a little brain cloud.

So please mammas, have you ever forgotten to latch your child in, or committed some other mommy faux pas involving safety?

Please do confess!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for "confessing." I feel better knowing that I'm not alone. I'm just hoping DD doesn't slip and tell Daddy because she kept reminding me about it for the rest of the day :-)

Only because I work with computers and hate bad metaphors, that would be a system error.

A computer does not use itself.

I think all of us have forgot to buckle in their kids at some point.

My six year old threw a fit about having to be in a booster and threw it on the floor of our car. Exhausted, going less than a mile, I thought, what the heck. . .
I got pulled over for an expired inspection (it expired while on vacation and I didn't plan ahead) and then got blasted for not having my child properly restrained (seat belt on, just no booster).

ARGH. Well, bright side, I get NO SAS any longer about mom's car rules:)

Not safety related....just "DUHHHH"

A couple of weeks ago, on the way home from work, right before my boys' first baseball game of the season (game time in 1 hour!), I realized that I hadn't bought them baseball pants! I felt like SUCH a doofus. They are required to slide into home this season and can't do that in shorts....OUCH!

*And* that I had no idea what type (short or long), color, or size they needed! And my kids were at home. And I didn't have time to go get them and take them to MC Sports to try them on.

So I went to MC Sports, called the coach and asked about the type and color, and bought 4 pairs of differently sized pants, in hopes that they'd fit.

Phew! They did. So no harm done. The extras went back to the store the next day.

Don't worry....we're all featherbrained sometimes.

ETA: Oh yes, and what parent hasn't locked their kid in the car....or had their kid lock them out? I've done it with two toddlers in the car. With the car running. In the Winter.

I had my daughter in her infant car seat while visiting a friend's house. I had forgotten that I opened the straps. She was sleeping so I covered her with a blanket. We left and didn't notice until we got home that she was never strapped in! I never made that mistake again.

Oh, yes, these moments do happen. And maybe even worse: When my daughter was about 5, I was driving her and my Granny on an outing to the beach. We had to stop for gas and a restroom, and I thought all of us had made it back into the car. A couple of blocks later, my grandmother looked back and asked calmly, "Don't you think it would be a good idea to get L?"

Yikes! But my smart little girl just waited by the restroom door, sure that I would notice and come back for her. She was not upset, but I sure was! I felt like the world's most idiotic mother.

I probably could have pulled the seatbelt stunt, too, but this was way back in the dark ages, before car seats or even seatbelts were a legal requirement.

My daughter was about 1.5 and she did the same thing - leaned really far forward while I was driving and I turned around to see that she was not buckled. It was at night and I was pregnant and felt horrible. I stopped and buckled her in!

I also - when she was about 1 year old, managed to lock her in my car! I buckled her into the carseat and shut the door - only to realize she had the keys in her hand and the door was locked!! The extra set was with hubby at work! I frantically called my mom and the police (while she happily played with my keys). The police was there and had the door open within 10 minutes and she never got upset or fussy. I felt horrible for sure!

Just yesterday when my son was throwing a fit and I was steering him back to him room after he refused to stay put, my one long nail accidently dug into his skin on his shoulder and left a mark. Again, felt horrible and apologized.

So don't worry - it happens!!

Yes I did. After baseball practice, my son was putting the equipment away in the trunk. I didn't see his hand and closed it. Yep, right on his fingers. The darn thing locked too! I had to unlock it and hope his fingers weren't laying on the floor.

Thank God nothing was broken just bruised. But his hand was a puffy hand for several days. I felt like the lowest of the low! I must have apologized for years!

Oh yes. I have done this more than once, I must say. My kids will say something pretty quickly, so it's usually fixed pretty quick. Don't feel horrible. Moms are humans after all.
When I was a kid, we just flopped around the backseat, which was pretty much the norm in the day. In the winter, my mom would let me sleep in the floorboard on cold mornings to be close to the heat! Amazing to think about now.
