I was so proud today as I put my big girl (who can sit up on her own!) in the shopping cart. And by the big smiles on her face so was she!
No longer did she have to stretch her neck to see out of her car seat. She was sitting big and tall checking everyone out. UNTIL mom went for some marinara and then waalaa baby decides I must taste this big bright shopping cart.
I wish I could say it happened only once but of course it didn't.
I'm freaked out as I know its cold season. She has next round of shots on the 7th but she hasn't had a flu shot as of yet.
Is this normal? Do I need to lighten up and realize this gross stuff happens? or should I just keep her in her carseat maybe till she's done teething?
Shopping Cart cover!? OMG genius I had no idea! I stay in the baby aisle I don't know how I missed this.
Thanks gals, *I'm wiping the sweat off my brow.* Can we say over react much? LOL
I hope you all can relate... As I drove home I went through a million scenarios in my head of how she's gonna have Hep C, Polio, Herpes, Some new disease never heard of. The crazy thing is I kept saying your over reacting. Your doing that mom thing again. But it didnt work. I had to reach out to other women. It makes me feel better.
When I say i'm a first time mom. What I mean is the only baby I've ever held is my own. Might seem crazy but I swear its true. The youngest kid I ever held was about 2. Never grew up around babies nor did I ever care to be around babies. So... a big huge thank you!
I just hope this shopping cart cover is something I'll use for some months and not weeks. I'm praying that she'll get the concept of NO any day now. But, well I guess that's just a prayer :)

You made me smile...I have 3 kids ages almost 2 to 6 1/2 yrs. Just wait till you are potty training her and you must take her to the public toilet, she insists on flushing and then before you can do anything about it, she jams all 4 fingers of the flushing hand into her mouth. You'll vow to never use a public restroom again...until the next time she's with you and is screaming "I have to pee pee!" Welcome to the joys of motherhood. Oh, and do invest in a shopping cart cover. At least it will make you feel better.

Grosser things have happened.
I have a friend with twins and the boy once ate goose poop at the park... he was one step too far away when it happened...

Oh this is only the beginning:)
Wait until there is sand in the mouth from the park.
Once she knows it does not taste good..She wont gum at it.
If you are ubber grossed out about it...I would get the seat cover thing. I used it with my youngest and liked them!
My youngest is 3 and still sticks EVERYTHING in his mouth. I stopped reacting when I see it, because there is nothing you can do about it at that point:)

Hahaha, I caught my four year old licking the counter that the cash register is on at the supermarket the other day. Yuck!
She will be fine... being exposed to germs strengthens the immune system.
Good luck!

All five of mine survived the eating the cart etc... and no flu shots.
Are you breastfeeding? She should be fine this one time w/all the immunities you are passing on to her. If not, I think she'll be okay.
My kid was on the otherside of a glass door in a playland once and knocked on the glass to get my attention, and when I looked at him, he was dragging his tongue from one side to the other, washing away all those greasy handprints that were clearly visible. I was THIS close to dipping his tongue in anti bacterial gel.
He's still alive!

My daughter licks absolutely EVERYTHING. Honestly, shopping carts are the least of our worries. She licks playground equipment, windows of all kinds, floors, the lid of the toilet in our house (I was a second too late on stopping that one). This week she licked the library. Like the side of the building. She's nuts. But also a very healthy kid. I wouldn't worry about it. I feel like people are more contagious than objects.

No worries, mama! Yup, it's gross. Yup there are a ton of germs & yuckiness on the cart. THe chances of her picking up anything that 's dangerous is really, really, really small.
Germs happen. Think of the great story you'll get to tell when she's older!
It'll be OK.

Don't worry, mom. Get a shopping cart cover and also a lot of stores now have little wipes that you can use to wipe the handle bar of the cart. Remember, God made dirt and dirt don't hurt!

I'm sure many moms will tell you its normal b/c it is. However, that never stopped me from freaking out when things like that happened. lol. I bought one of those shopping cart covers...something like this:
Some people say its a waste of money and kids need germs and that's true but the fact that some people put raw meat in those shopping carts gave me pause.

I never used shopping cart covers, disinfecting wipes, antibacterial soap, or hand sanitizer, and followed the three second rule for items dropped on the floor. And my daughter seldom got sick. People I knew who bleached and Lysoled everything in sight and scrubbed their kids hands as though they were about to perform surgery always had sick kids.

normal but her likely hood of getting sick from it is just as high as your hands being on it and then spreading the germs to her diaper bag or replacement toy that you gave her instead which she probably threw on the floor. i hate grocery carts and that is def one time that right when we get in the car i use sanitizer on everyone although i know that the germs have already entered throughout the store it makes me feel better.

It happens. My (ahem) 9 year old sometimes does it. While we're walking. She also will sometimes put her mouth on the pews at church. But she's got a tendency toward mouthing objects* so I try to bring disinfecting wipes with me and use the ones they provide in stores on the carts.

TOTALLY normal. Get a shopping cart cover, and you don't have to worry about that! That's why I did. My son's favorite teething things were always cold and metal! I generally don't worry too much about germs, but I always do about grocery carts. They are touched by so many different people and come into contact with so many food-borne bacteria.

I wouldn't worry, babies have put all kinds of things in thier mouths and are just fine. Is she still breastfeeding? Then she will have your antibodies, also if she is then you can take some extra vitamin C.

Make sure you get the cover that can also fit on high chairs! My 7 month old son was chewing on a sticky high chair and I reacted about like you did (he's still fine, no residual ill effects). Now I always use the cover for the cart or the high chair. It even has little tags and strings he likes to play with while we eat/shop.

LOL we have all been there! Especially when it's your first child (which I'm assuming since you didn't mention siblings). Once you have another you really have do decide which things are worth worrinying over since you can't worry about them all! At any rate, seat covers will work, however I found them to be way too time consuming-a real pain. Plus you'd have to have more than one for when one is in the wash. After two times I ditched them and kept Clorox wipes and paper towels in my car. I usually try to park next to a cart return (again way easier on the way out!) so that I could grab a cart and clean/dry the seat part of the cart right away before even getting in the store. Nowadays, the stores actually provide wipes for you! You can just bring in the paper towel and throw it away with the wipe! Great solution for restaurant high chairs too-it was too much trouble to try and bring in the kind of high chairs that sit on a chair. Just easier to use theirs. Don't keep her in her carseat-the more experiences she has the better off she will be. The store is new and cool from the cart view! Good luck!
If she's still nursing she should have your antibodies. I never do flu shots for my kids and they've put plenty of gross things in their mouth. Some normal everyday exposure to germs is actually good for building their immune system.
