Onsie Question

Hey mamas! My son is 15 months old and it's just getting cold around here (was in the 50's over Thanksgiving weekend but starting to drop). How long did / do you have your children wear onsies under their clothing? With my daughter (now 3) I had her wear one when it was winter months until she was 2 years old.

To be honest with my son, I haven't even really thought about it. I dress him warmly but he HATES getting dressed so I guess the thought of another layer is not so appealing to me! I don't put him in one at bedtime because he gets hot at night and often pees through his diaper (no matter what we've tried) so I'd rather not an avoid washing 7 onsies each week!

Just wondering if you did the same for all children? He usuallly wears a long sleeved shirt/sweater or cardigan with pants and socks (I also don't put shoes on him when he goes to daycare because he kicks them off first thing!). I also have a jacket, gloves, scarf and hat for him.

What can I do next?

I remember stopping when the size wasn't available anymore, so I guess I liked the onesies! I just liked the tops with snaps so they stayed tucked in & neat looking, I guess.

My daughter is 20 months old and I don't typically put a onsie under her clothes. Only if she's wearing a jumper dress or a sweater that might irritate her skin. Really, who needs all those snaps?!

No, I never have.
I've never layered my kids like that, though, and it's never been a thought to do it. My 2.5yo is in long sleeves and pants when it's cold, and nothing underneath. He's always been just fine.
My rule of thumb is that my kids don't need to be dressed any differently than I am. I don't wear an underlayer unless we'll be outside for a long period of time. Our house is plenty warm.

I don't really think you need it. If anything, I'd worry about him being too hot.

I'm likely on the other side of the spectrum... I had both my boys in onsies until the onsies no longer were made big enough. (my boys were on the smaller side anyway.) I felt like they kept the diaper and pull-ups in place better and were a good layer in the cold weather and at night.

at night - you are right it's more of a hassle to change the onsie when they have wet.. but sometimes I could put the pj's back on because the onsie 'soaked' up the excess moisture if spilled out. ** this is actually the nighttime when keeping the diaper in place with the onsie actually helped.

so up until about 24 months + .... then summer / or potty training started

good luck.

I used them until potty training. I hate when the shirt pulls up leaving a bare belly/back when playing/being picked up/reaching/etc.

& as for him not liking getting dressed, it's a basic life skill. & he needs to learn cooperation....which then applies to the shoes too! & as a daycare provider, I am surprised that they are letting him get away with it. Time to teach him cooperation & listening to adults!

I stopped at about 12 months. My son is 18 months old he doesn't wear a onesie. I do keep him dressed warm though. He usually wears a long sleeve onesie with jean or a sweatshirt and sweatpants.

Hope it helps.

You can just layer a long sleeve T-shirt under the short sleeved T-shirt. Kids look cute in that layered look. Plus, the if house gets too warm you can take a layer off and he is still dressed.

We keep our house comfortable.

Most docs advise dress your kids like you are dressed. If you are wearing undershirts and multiple layers then your child needs then too. If you are wearing short sleeved shirts and pants in the house then that's what is acceptable for the kids too.

If you are comfortable and dress the kids in more clothes then they ae going to be too hot and can't tell you about it.

Also, I prefer to be comfortable at night to sleep. I can add a layer or snuggle in a blanket during the day but at night I want to be comfortable. The heat is actually turned to a higher temp at night than daytime, one reason is it's cooler at night and other is if I get up to go pee I don't want to freeze my hinny off on the cold toilet seat.

I don't do the onsie under clothes. I just bundled for outside if needed. Both of my kids are sweatboxes.

As far as the peeing through the diaper at night... My daughter did this. The only 'fix' was putting a cheap cloth diaper inside the disposable diaper. THE ONLY FIX.

I usually put that extra layer on my kids in the winter time , even now that they have outgrown onesies I put cami's on the girls and a ribbed tank on my son (they are Fruit of the loom and are found in Target). My kids don't really have a lot of meat on them so I think they need this layer.

I usually use onsies until they are about three, because thats when you can't find any more that fit! LOL! My son was bigger than my girls, so he stopped wearing them at 2. But I always put a white t-shirt or an A-shirt underneath his clothes - He is 6 now.

Use a long sleeved t-shirt... under a regular short-sleeved t-shirt.
And pants. Or fleece type pants.... and a hoodie jacket, or winter vest over his t-shirt.
Fleece clothes, are always warmer... thus maybe you won't have to layer so much.

Look on Old Navy online... they have cute ones.... and many sales right now.
And long sleeved/long pants pajamas.

And for at night and his leaking diaper... get a waterproof bed pad.... put it directly under him. Makes clean up SO much easier and you then will not have to wash the sheets/bedding all the time.
I got mine from Amazon. Just input the search words "waterproof bed pads" or "waterproof crib bed pads."
And try the Huggies overnight night-time diapers.
But personally, I changed my kids' diapers at night, at least once, when they were babies. They didn't wake.

all the best,
Susan

I was always told to dress your kids like you dress. If you require extra clothing then they do too. If you wear a t-shirt then they can too. I don't know why people think babies are more cold than adults are.. usually the opposite and often see babies sweating because they are dressed too warm. I always kept socks on them as long as they would keep them on. Used a onesie if I was cold but most of the time pants and a sweat shirt or sweat outfit were fine.

I used onesies until my boys were potty trained. Onc ethey were potty trained it made it harder for them to take theselves to the potty. So they stopped wearing them at around age 2.

If I remember correctly, my daughters wore them until arround age 3. They stopped for 2 reasons - potty training and they outgrew them.

IMO they're great in winter for that extra layer to keep them warm. Also, because when wearing pants with some type of top, their middle is often exposed, so with a onsie there's no bare skin.

I always kept a onsie on my kids in the cooler months to protect their bare bellies from showing and getting cold with all of their active movements and being picked up. I quit as most other posters stated, when they potty trained or were too large for them. I would sometimes skip the onsie if their shirt was a snap crotch shirt and would stay tucked in. I still put a cami or tank on my girl and boy in winter and tuck this into their pants to keep their waist area covered and warmer.
