One Year Old Only Taking Very Short Naps

My 12 1/2 month old used to take 2 solid 1 - 1 1/2 hour naps each day. This past week he will only nap exactly 30 mintues for each nap. He is still very tired when he wakes up, and if I rock him he will fall right back to sleep, but as soon as I put him back in his crib he wakes immeadiately. Has anyone experienced this? I wonder if he is ready for only 1 nap, but as he is tired for both naps and goes to sleep fairly easy I'm not sure. Also, I do think he might be getting a molar, but this has been going on for eight days which is much longer than any past teething problems and Motrin doesn't seen to help with the naps. Any advice would be great.

What can I do next?

Try to hold him off until after lunch. Usually at this age they start to take one big nap in the afternoon.. usually last about 2 hours... Try it and see what happens.. don't let him fall asleep before lunch.. you'll see after about 1 week or so of this type of nap.. it will be routine.. good luck.. Happy Thanksgiving!!

He's certainly old enough for just 1 nap. Try skipping the early nap and see how he is. Then put him down to sleep in between the 2 normal naptimes.
My daughter started protesting naptime about that age. (She was clearly tired and needed a nap, but didn't want to stop playing, walking, and exploring new things she could do.) If your son has learned anything new recently, like walking, that could interrupt his normal sleep patterns because he'll want to practice. Just something to keep in mind.

I know that moving to one nap seems horrible - but it works out nicely. I enjoy being able to get out and about in the morning without rushing home for naptime. Then when my daughter naps, I have some down time or I'm in "get it done" mode. Sounds like he may be ready for 1 nap - good luck!

Kids go through frequent changes in their sleep habits. He might go back to his old ways in a couple more days or like the other moms said maybe he is ready for one nap, he is at the right age. My son is almost 23 months and he has been taking a 2 to 3 hour nap for almost a year. It started out around 11:30 and now he doesn't take it until around 1:30 so I can get more errands done in the morning which is nice.

My son did exactly the same thing at that age....and in our situation it meant he was ready to transition to one nap. He use to nap at 9:30a.m. and again at 2:00p.m...when we moved him to one nap, everyday or two I would put him down a 1/2 hour later...so we could finally reach a naptime of 12 or 1. Goodluck!
