One Year Old Extreme Temperament Changes

Hi there,
I have a one year old son that was diagnosed with a sinus infection one month ago. It started as a normal cold and then got worse with signs such as: him being absolutely terrified of the vaccuum cleaner all of a sudden. Figured it was the pressure in his head once we learned he had a sinus problem. Well, the sinus infection and ear infections have now cleared up, so they think, and he is once again terrified of the vaccuum. Not a big deal but other things are happening such as: him waking up in the middle of the night and crying for three hours straight no matter what I do, he won't eat, he will drink which is good, but he also wines all day long and fusses all day long, and cries for 20 minutes after he wakes up in the morning and won't let me get him out of the crib. He writhes around and cries as though he is in pain. His dirty diapers have an unusual terrible smell to them also which has been going on for a few days. He was taken in a day ago and I told the dr. about these symptoms and they said they couldn't see that anything was wrong with him. Figured he was teething. I have been giving him Tylenol and occasionally Motrin throughout the day and it doesn't seem to do anything. None of these traits are normal for him.
Has anyone dealt with something like this before?
Any thoughts or advice?

So What Happened?

Well, I greatly appreciate all the responses. I took him into the doctor again yesterday after she talked to me and said she wanted to see him. Then we she saw him, he was acting perfectly, like the good old Brandon I knew, and she checked everything out and said he was perfect. He did have a lot of gas yesterday so I am wondering if he was going through some sort of viral stomach bug, etc. I would think of a food allergy but he hadn't been eating for about two weeks so that makes me want to rule that out. Last night though, he started acting more like himself again so hopefully it is all past. Thank you so much for your help and concern. I was overwhelmed that they're were people out there that would take the time to give me advice. I didn't know anything about the "one year molars" though. Do the molars come in around one year? Maybe that is it. He already has 10 teeth and has had that many since he was 8 months old. He handled teething without a problem thus far so I guess I never considered teething really an issue. Any advice for easing teething pain without constant medicating?

Hi,
Waas he on antibotics? If so, call me and I can talk to you about this. It might have disrupted his digestive bacteria and that is causing him so issues. My 10 month old displayed similiar types of issues and the medical docturs said she was fine. Only when I went to a chiropractor and he ran some medical microbiology tests did we find out the reason for her behavior. A couple of days on the stuff they reccomended and she is a completely different child. It amazes me every day. I feel your pain and I am sorry you are having to deal with this. K. ###-###-####

Hi, B.!

My daughter went through something similar very recently. She was a pretty happy kid. Then she got a cold. It progressed and we thought it went away. She still looked sick and wasn't acting herself. Long story short, we ended up taking her to the doctor and found out she had an ear infection. Throughout this time, though, she became a terror. She would throw these tantrums for 45 minutes, screaming at the top of her lungs. She wouldn't let me pick her up. But I couldn't leave the room either. My husband was worried it was something serious. She wouldn't take her medicine, so we were afraid she wouldn't get rid of the infection. In the last day or two she seems to be getting back to her old self. She's 18 months old and getting her molars. I think the combination of teething, the ear infection, her age, etc. triggered something horrible. If the infections are gone and you know he's healthy, I recommend not giving in to him and see if it's just a temper thing. While he was sick, he may have learned that you'll respond to whatever he wants. Now he's better and might want to continue it.

Best of luck!

From what your saying it sounds like a ear infection to me but if he was just at the doctors then I guess that's not it. It could be teething too. If he's still like this in a few days bring him in again.

I know my daughter pretty much switched personalities right after her first birthday. She went from a perfect happy baby to a tempertantrum, whining, screaming, happy one minute crazy one year old.

He could be getting his one year molars. These are one of the most painful teeth to cut.

Hi B. -

My recommendation would be to try another pediatrician. If you really think something is wrong - trust your instinct.

sounds to me like you need a new doctor. with the very foul smelling diapers and him being abosolutely inconsolable for that period of time tells me there is something really wrong with him. Maybe he is having nightmares, I know I was always inconsolable after one. Also with the vaccuum, since it is something you HAVE to do, try holding him when you do it, that and telling my daughter a big noise was coming helped her get over her fear of it.

Did they check his ears for infection? Has he shown any food allergies, or been introduced to any new foods lately that could be upsetting his tummy or causing him painful gas?

Hi - I am not sure about your son. It sounds pretty extreme. I can tell you what has been happening in my family - my 2 year old had a cold and got over it but for the last couple of days was fussier than usual. My husband, my mother in law, and me all had severe headaches between last weekend and today. I think it might be related to a virus. I suspect my little son also may have had a bad headache related to the virus. Not sure of course, just a guess.
