Hello Mommies.

My 2 year old son had a little boo-boo yesterday (8/30), he fell back and hit his head. Still not sure what he actually hit since my house is pretty much "baby-proof" but, he did have a small cut in the back of his head. It bled plenty though he was in good spirits I thought it was best to take him to the ER. The ER Doctor told me it doesn't have to do so much with "what" he hit but, the "impact" of the hit/fall. The doctor said it was pretty small but, he went ahead and put ONE staple to help it heel. Now my question to you guys is… when can he swim? We have his sister's b-day POOL party planned out for this Saturday and I'm sure he'll want to be in the pool along with the other children – will this be ok? His staple is scheduled to be removed until 9/8/10.

Any advise is appreciated.

Thank you, M.

This is a question for your doctor... my daughter had a small cut by her nose and it was NO water on it for two weeks to let it fully scab over and a good start on healing. The ER doc told me that she could not shower or swim for two weeks, she said it is better to air on the side of caution so that NO infection can get in, if wet the wound will not heal and and infection can get into it. Also since it was a head wound I had to watch for signs of trauma after that fact for a week, because you never know with kids.

I would say that the pool party this Sat is out, it sucks but would you rather be cautious and know your little one is safe OR let him have his fun for now at the pool and then get an infection with could be life threatening? Once ask your doc.

With dogs and cats we say no swimming or bathing until the stitches/staples come out (generally 10 to 14 days). Having said that I've had stitches several times and the most recent time they said I could shower after two days. I would ask your child's pediatrician.

You need to check with the doctor. I would think if he isn't going to be getting dunked under the water then it might be okay for him to take a quick swim but I'd check to be sure.

Like everyone else has said check with the doctor. When I had staples in the top of my head the only thing they told me in the ER was to be careful brushing my hair to make sure I didn't snag them. I was still allowed to shower and I think that night even. It is amazing how easier it is to cut a head and how much they bleed, I do remember that mine really didn't hurt at all. Hope all of you can enjoy the pool party after checking in with his doctor.

What did the doctor advise about washing his hair? Personally, I think its a touch too soon. (Is there a chance that it might start bleeding in the water?)

At age 2, does he really get his face and head wet in the pool? Or would he be ok chugging and being pushed around in one of those inflatable toddler boats?
