My one-year-old little guy has the chicken pox. I was just looking for any suggestions from you other mommies out there on how to get him through this as comfortably as possible.
Those pesky little red spots just keep coming.
Thanks so much!

A.,

I hope this helps. My daughter has not had chicken pox, But I have had chicken pox, & shingles twice. The last time was in Feb of this year.

I recommned L-lysine. This is an amino acid, you can find at at health food store. You may have to grind it up & mix it in applesauce or something. Being it is a herpes virus, this will help to fight it off.

Oatmeal bathes (Aveeno) & lotions

Calamine lotion & Aloe- this will help to prevent scarring.

For pain & fever, the usual ibuprofen, & tylenol

Hope this helps.

What ever you do do not let him get sweaty. I thought bundling my son up and covering all the bumps would help him not scratch and they got WORSE!. I hate to tell you this but it is an airborne thing... all who have not had it in your house will have it with in the next 2 weeks. My son who was 8 at the time brought it home and gave it to my son who was 6 months old.
This is a very sad thing to deal with. BUT it does go away!

Take Care and God Bless.

My 2 year old had them about 5 months ago. I gave him LOTS of Aveeno baths, and it was warm out them so I would fill up his baby pool with Aveeno too and let him play in it as long as he wanted. He was vaccinated at one, but the vaccine failed. I stopped counting the pox when I got to 300. He had them EVERYWHERE, even inside his mouth.

Try not to make a huge deal out of it (I know it's hard because you feel so bad for them!) but they don't know enough at this age to feel sorry for themselves, they just want to keep playing. My son would look at his belly and point to them and say "Go Away!" It was heartbreaking for me to watch but he really thought he was making them go away faster.

My pediatrician said not to put any lotion on them so I only put it on the ones that really seemed to bother him. I guess they can get infected if you put lotion on them once they burst.

Hang in there - it will be over before you know it!

Calomine lotion, oatmeal baths, mittens while he sleeps (you may want to put them on AFTER he falls asleep). My mother said I had chicken pox sometime between ages 1 and 2 and the one thing I remeber her telling me is that she would lather me up with calomine lotion until I was pink all over and then she would put tight fitting clothes on me (longjohns, tights, long sleeve shirts)- apparently it kept me from scratching so much and it helped things heal. At night she let me sleep naked to air out the paces that I had scratched. I would suggest having a similar routine. I can only imagin that snug clothes would be best as loose clothes would lightly brush the skin causing it to itch. Good luck with whatever you do and I hope your baby gets better!

i can feel for the baby, it is not a fun thing to have. i raised 5 children and i used the old fashioned method of warm baking soda sponge baths as well as baking soda in the warm bath water. oat meal is also good, but i always had better luck with baking soda. my 2 boys had chicken pox and my 3 girls had measles at the same time then they got over one they got the other and talk about a bad month for mom.........
take care and good luck J. GMAJ

When my girls had them they didn't bother them much at all. I gave them luke warm baking soda baths. Lots of liquids. And if he starts scratching to much put gloves or socks on his little hands. The less he picks at them the quicker they will go away. Also if he picks at them they will leave scars. Keep him busy playing. He'll be fine.
