I am listed on both, not in MI though. I can tell you that the little 20 dollar background check is just what can be found on the web. I wouldn't put too much emphasis into that. It just means we don't have anything big on our record in the last 10 years. A person could have something in the last few months or older than 10 years or something that was expunged as a minor.
If you have a college or university in your area that would be a good place to look. Where I live the university has a jobs board where you can post an ad, for free. There are many college students who like to pick up babysitting jobs. Pick a few candidates and meet with them to see if they are a good fit for your family.
Sittercity seems to be pretty good, my area is just sorely lacking in good sitters!

I agree with SLM. I placed an ad on both sincerity and care. We could the best babysitter. She is awesome and takes excellent care of my 3 little ones. Good luck.
Try seekingsitters.com. I just saw a presentation from them, and they put all their sitters through a background check. They handle requests for daytime, nighttime, part time, or full time. They even have toys that they bring along to engage your child(ren). I haven't used them myself (as we already have a couple of babysitters) but I was impressed at how thorough the presentation was. I would really feel safe using them.
