Okay, my husband is in the Army, they don't send your W-2's in the mail, they show up on a website, and you print them out or request for a paper copy. Well, today my husband gets a W-2 in (we've already filed our taxes, by the way, ONLINE) and at first glance it looks like a regular W-2. I got to looking at it and everything is zeroed out except for box 12a, it's code P and it's for like $4,000 some odd dollars. What is this? I asked my mom and she said that it would be where we moved last year to where we are now, but she's not sure if this is what he need to pay in or if this is what we should get back. how do I find this out without going to a tax professional? because honestly, I'm not paying someone to answer a question. Any advice will help, THANK YOU!!!

If it had to do with a move it is definitely not something you need to pay. Depending on whether or not the army paid for the move would have to do if you get any money back or not. If you paid for the move, you can write that off and get money back but because there is a dollar value it probably means that the army paid for it and this is how much it cost. Either way, you don't have to pay for it.

I believe this is moving expence income that the army paid and you would be liable to pay the tax on this amount as it is a fringe benefit.

From the back of a W-2
P Excludable moving expense reimbursement paid directly to employee (not included in box 1,3,5). Not sure what that means so I would also suggest you call the IRS.

Why don't you call the IRS hotline? Another idea is to contact the payroll department in the Army. Either of these sources should know the right answer and there is no fee.

Call DFAS or have your husband go to finance.........If you live on or near a base...most bases have a place where they do your taxes for free and you can go question them................Is your husband deployed? Go to his rear detachment office someone there will send you in the right direction............
