I just noticed body odor in my 6 year olds armpits!! He just took a shower a couple hours ago and we were all wrestling around... well suddenly I realized his armpits stunk!! He will be 7 in a few months, this is not something I thought I would have to deal with for at least a couple more years!! He is of average height/weight and no health issues... not even a super active child truthfully... is this normal so young???

ETA/As a response to another mama - We don't drink cows milk and havent for 2 years. We have very limited amounts of dairy

What can I do next?

Boys just have a strange body odor. My older son, now 16, seemed to stink a lot. I can remember that I always told him starting from about first grade to get in the shower each time he came in from playing. It helped a lot because when he really started to stink he was always taking a shower and applying deodorant for good hygiene. I work on the school bus with a lot of jr. high kids and they really stink after school. I think a lot of it has to do with testosterone. My younger son, age 6, has a different kind of smell that is not so obnoxious.

Arm & Hammer "Essentials" Natural Deodorant. Does not have aluminum or parabens in it.
My 8 year old Daughter, uses that. Easily found at drug stores.

Yes, that happens, in my Daughter's class too, at that age.
She is a healthy eater, we don't buy junk, no hormone foods etc.

all the best,
Susan

I was floored when the same thing happened to my 5yo. Our doc says that it's totally normal for even toddlers to experience periods where they're producing scent. That typically, it's just a facet of hormones shifting around, and that it's a phase that will pass in a few months. They were right. A few months later, and no matter how hard he was working, no BO. Then at 7 (more than 2 years later) it kicked back in for a few weeks and dropped, and now at 8 it's been about 2 months of "Kiddo... go grab some deodorant!".

*To know* If you're leary of aluminum, don't use the rock deodorant. It's pure (90%-100%) aluminum salt (the same ingredient that is in antiperpirants at 10%-16%)

Hi Jamie,

Most odors come from the inside out. You can try a natural deodorant for him but I would try an absorbable multivitamin first. Sometimes it's simply an outpouring of things in your system that need to be purged. Even though someone doesn't get sick a lot doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't things in his body that shouldn't be there. Most people have an overabundance of synthetic chemicals in them from simply eating foods that had pesticides or preservatives. These type things wreak havoc on a body and sometimes come out in an odor.

Just my two cents...

M.

Has he been sick recently? When my kids have been down with a cold, flu or virus they emit odd odors for several days. And wrestling/sweating would help bring those smells to the surface.

Or did he spend the night at a friends/relatives? My kids always smell different for a while when they have slept elsewhere.

And hormonally, it does sound early for any pubescent changes, so perhaps just a random emission test being conducted by his hormones. I would only worry if the smell is chronic and lasts longer than a few days. Then there might be some pre-pubescent issues at play.

I use and always recommend deodorant stones. They are all natural and recommended by oncologists across the country. They are made from a salt that works not by masking odor, but by making the treated areas (arm pits, feet, etc.) uninhabitable to the bacteria that cause odors. This would be safe for anyone to use.

http://bit.ly/ihBhsm or http://bit.ly/iaD7mf are both brands I have used. The first one I bought (Thai 4.25 oz. deodorant stick) lasted 23 MONTHS! It is a little more expensive than regular deodorant, but since you don't have to replace it every month, you are saving in the long run.

Does he drink a lot of milk?
My son was getting BO at about 5 and upon suggestion, I switched to organic milk and he has never....ever....not once.....had it again.

You can also have him use (just for added measure) a natural, aluminum free deodorant such as Toms of Maine.

My 6 year old son also has body odor!! I asked around an it seems like no other friend's 6 year olds have BO. I got him some Tom's of Maine deoderant. At first I thought maybe it was the milk and switched to organic (that's obviously not your case). Then I read it could be a case of not getting enough zinc in the diet. I make sure he gets multivitamins every day. The body odor is gone now...maybe it was the multivitamins? I have no idea.

My son was the same way and he's 11 now and STINKS even more! The kicker is his pits still smell after he scrubs them in the shower. I finally ended up getting him Dry Idea which helps a lot.
