I'm wondering if our 5-year-old daughter is too young to attend a Miley Cyrus concert. My husband says yes, but I'm not sure. I'd be interested in what others think about this ...

So What Happened?

We decided against letting her go. She asked us if we had decided and we told her no and that she was still too young and she was OK with it. My daughter is a fan of Hannah and watches the show, has seen the concert movie, etc. We've also taken her to see Laurie Berkner and Sesame Street at concert venues, albeit smaller and quieter.

I told my husband that we would post our question on Mamasource and let the moms decide. You've always come through and had good advice. But I've got to admit I was a little shocked by some of the judgmental responses and thought some of the responses were a little harsh. If I wanted to be judged and made to feel like a bad mother, I would have asked my mother in law. But thanks for responding.

Yes, she's too young. Why do parents want their precious little one to grow up so fast? If you start doing these things for her now, what will she expect when she's 12? That's an appropriate age for a Miley concert.

I think too young, for a couple of reasons.

1) Volume of the concert. Your daughter has no frame of reference to understand how much louder it's going to be there versus in your living room. Her idea of what she is going to see and hear will be VERY different than what she experiences at age 5. You can use ear plugs to help mute the sound - without them, she could potentially suffer minor ear damage or ringing in her ears from the volume at her age.

2) Everyone knows that teenage girls these days often dress super suggestively. Is that really something you want your 5 year-old daughter to see and maybe even try to copy on her own?

I agree with your husband on this one.

My daughter is 21 years old, goes to a lot of concerts, and is going to college for tour managing and production. I trust her opinion a lot with this question. When I read the question out loud her response was definitely let her go, except the tour she is on now. If the group Metro Station is performing they are highly inappropriate for children. Actually when my daughter first found out that they were touring together, she was completely disgusted. There is no way Miley Cyrus should be touring with this band, unless the band doesn't do the songs their fans know. Metro Station has a high amount of sexual content, and my daughter says that Disney actually messed up - and she is a huge Disney fan.

Good luck and hopefully Metro Station is not on the tour you want to go to!

though I don't know many of the lyrics to Miley Cyrus songs or even much about her other than the occasional garbage you see on the interent, I would have to say yes, she's too young. In my opinion, a five year old should be worried about Disney princess songs, Mickey Mouse, Tinkerbell and so forth. Miley is not a raunchy artist, but the content of her music is geared toward older children, if not teens.

And the whole concert scene even if it is Miley Cyrus is not for five year olds.

I would encourage her to act her age and not encourage her to listen to Miley at all. Kids grow up too fast these days and not in good ways either. They try to act like they are grown in all the wrong ways and shirk the maturity and responsibility they need to develop so often.

Personally I don't think it would damage her, but it's just not appropriate for a small child. But that's just my opinion.

I say go for it. I took my youngest daughter when she was four and she LOVED it. The audience was all moms and kids. It was a very tame atmosphere, nothing like a regular rock concert.

Hi, S.,

In a word: DON'T!

The crowds, the milling aroud, the aimlessly driven feeling of a concert -- too weird, too much! I'm sorry, but the noise alone will be enough to freak out a 5-year-old. Miley herself will be nothing but a brightly lit speck on a faraway stage. I speak as a veteran pop girl whose first show was the Beatles, 1964, at the International Amphitheatre, and countless others since. I looked forward to introducing my boys (now 23 and 19!) to this experience and believe it or not, I waited till they were 19 and 15 to take them to a G-rated Paul McCartney show -- first arena concert for the elder one, first show at all for the younger. It was wonderful BUT it would have been completely overwhelming for my younger son, even at 13.
So, S., even though I don't like to tell people what to do, I will tell you to bide your time with your little girl. We must let our children look forward to something in life. Let her wait for a concert till she is at least big enough to elbow her own way through the throngs.
And good luck if all the other girls get to go -- but be firm! A big concert like that is no place for a 5-year-old!
:-)

I am going to guess that this is going to take place in a stadium or a large amphitheater? My kids have tried a couple of concerts in bigger places - Ralphs World at House of Blues was the biggest indoor space- and although I was having a blast, my 6 and 4 year olds decided they would boycott any additional shows since it was "too crowded, too noisy, and (we) couldn't see anything!" They were bumped, jostled and overwhelmed within 20 minutes. So, we left early.

I'd encourage you to check websites of local children's musicians and take in a couple of smaller, local concerts, if you haven't already done so. See how your daughter likes that, and if she loves the action, you could try alarger venue. But, for my kids, they went from loving small concerts (less than 150) to HATING concerts and refusing to go anymore after one bad experience!

Oh, we tried the Wiggles at the Chicago Theatre when my daughter was 3 1/2. That literally lasted 5 minutes, then we were out in the lobby eating M &M's and coloring while we waited for the rest of our group! ($80 in tickets down the drain!)

My local favs: Ralphs World and Jeanie B. and the Jellybeans.

we took our girls to High School Musical concert when they were 4 and 7. The TV show was wholesome, cute. But the concert the skirts were that much less, the movements that much more sexual. And the other acts they had were totally not appropriate. NOT DISNEY LIKE. I mean Vanessa Hutchins came out in basically lingerie when she did her solo. That type of stuff. Plus we thought we were so cool to have floor seats so our kids could see, but our kids were totally overwhelmed with the volume of noise that they didn't enjoy it as much as we had hoped.

Plus the concert started at say 7, but High School Musical part didn't really start till almost 8. It was a late night for our girls, but not terrible in that respect honestly.

We had a friend of our older dd who went and sat way way back - they didn't think it was too loud at all and with the large screens they could see it all they said. So maybe sit farther back?

The crowds were under control, the people were friendly and all had kids, so that part was fine.

Not sure how Miley would be, but just showing how a different Disney TV show varied from the concert.

You sound like a fun mom... but I'm voting for "too young"... This is "Miley"...not "Hannah Montana" and with the crowds of people, height of your child, volume of music, distance from stage and amount of money that you are going to pay for this incredible experience - I just think that she may do better at an event that may feature more of a "Hannah Montana" experience that is not so overcrowded, expensive, etc.... Has she seen the "Hannah Montana" movie yet?????

Good luck.

S.,
I wasn't planning on responding but after reading through the responses you got, I am compelled. Actually, I am shocked, but maybe I am a younger mom than most of those that responded. I would not have any problem taking my daughter, who is also 5, to a Miley Cyrus concert. Heck, we tried to get tickets when she was 4, but no luck. I don't know what theses other moms seem to think goes on at a KIDS CONCERT but it seems that they may be a little out of touch. If you child has been to any of the Disney on Ice shows , the big arena circus, heck, even a flea market or county fair, the crowds and noise should not be an issue. Plus, it's not like you're dropping her off and picking her up after the concert!
I do understand that the image may be something you want to avoid but I know that my 5 year old and I have talked numerous times about image and the fact that the clothing Miley wears are considered costumes, i.e. not appropriate for normal kids, etc. I really think it's all how you approach it. And really, I would have no problem leaving if me or the child was in any way uncomfortable. And I mean, really, to the mom who wouldn't let her sons go to concerts until they were almost adults??!! That sounds a little overprotective to me. But then again, I went to my 1st concert when I was 9, NKOTB, of course!
BTW, my husband and I regularly take our kids to concerts at the Civic Opera house, Ravinia, and other places, so a kids' concert to me seems to round out things a bit. Good Luck but I say go for it!

I vote for too young, if for no other reason than that it will be waaaaay too loud. Her hearing could be damaged. Also, I agree with the poster who said we seem to want to shorten our children's childhoods more & more. My daughter is turning 4 in August and I'm already fretting about not being able to shop in the toddler section. All the clothes I see in the girls' departments look like mini-teeny bopper clothes. It seems like I'm going to have to spend a lot of money at places like Hanna Andersson in order to keep my little girl looking like a little girl. Why do we want to rush things so much? I didn't go to my first big arena concert until I was in high school, and that seems perfectly ok to me. That being said, exposure to music and the arts is very important (and I personally wouldn't put Miley Cyrus in that category), so look into children's concerts at the Old Town School and places like that. CSO also offers children's concert series. And Ravinia is a WONDERFUL option if you don't want to take her to something that's just specifically for kids. The decibel level at Ravinia is much more pleasant, IMHO!

Hi S.,

I think she's too young. My 7 year-old daughter just saw the commerical for the concert tour too, but we said no. Miley is trying to break away from the Hannah image and her songs are racier and more adult oriented. I wouldn't have a problem with a Best of Both Worlds type concert where she played both people because that was more kid-friendly, but I think this tour is geared toward an older crowd.

my vote is too young. Children are growing up way faster than they should.....help keep you child a child as long as you can. think about the Miley Cyrus type concerts (remember when Brittany Spears was the big teeny booper drawing card?) and decide what image you want your child to present when you child hits 10.

While these shows are exciting and draw the younger children into the glamour, they are NOT age appropriate for most children below high school age. It is sad to see so many parents encouraging childhood to be shortened and the teen years to be extended. The teen years are the hardest!

This is a decision between you and your husband, and if you can't agree and he is adamant against it, then I'd say don't take her. It's not worth the trouble if you and your husband have a rift over it (especially if she's not necessarily asking to go). You can always take her to a concert when she's a little older. If you want to expose her to live music, find a local show in your town and take her. It'll be less overwhelming. My son will be 2 in July and he's been to several local music shows - he loves live music of any sort. The shows are open, usually outdoors, not too terribly crowded, and if it seems too loud, we put earplugs in his ears. However, even at age five, I don't think he'll be ready for an arena-size concert. I don't think at that age there would even be any artist or band he loves enough to want to deal with the crowd, the parking/getting out process, the noise, and the late night. I think I'd end up with a really grumpy kid before the night was over.

I do think it's great you don't want to shelter her! But just keep in mind that even though she plays a Disney character, a Miley Cyrus concert won't be a Disney concert - it will be a full-fledged pop/rock concert, with everything that goes along with it. Start her off with a small music show and work your way up!

There is nothing inappropriate about Miley, but 5 is too young for any concert. Maybe middle school age to start on the "nice" concerts. Just buy the concert DVD, she'll have the best seat in the house.

My theory about doing things really young with kids, is that the next event will need to be even better than the previous....that's why I don't agree with prom-goers getting limos and hairstylists and manicures. Sounds like preparation for a wedding. How are you going to top that?

Just keep it simple. She won't know what she's missing. Concerts are expensive too.

Okay, First off I am a little confused. For example, Hannah Montana is Miley Cyrus right? Why are some parents okay with one but not the other. It is the same person and I just don't get it. I am not a fan of any of these shows for girls under 8, but if you are and your daughter loves the show, then I don't see a problem. As long as you are there with her then she should be fine. It is a rock concert and it will be loud, but that is the worst it will get. I doubt there will be a riot at a Miley Cyrus concert. If you are okay with her being into Miley, then the concert would make her so happy. It is a nice mother daughter experience. She won't want to go to concerts with you when she is a teen, and parents are not cool anymore. I would go and make it a great memory with my daughter while she still thinks I am cool to hang out with.
