So we have all had those old, unfinished basements. I have one that we are doing laundry in and the smell is horrid down there. It is just that musty smell. I can hardly stand to go down there. I have cleaned like crazy but nothing seems to help. Does anyone know how to get the smell out? Maybe there is a product I can use to make it smell better?

TIA

Looks like I am getting a dehumidifyer and cleaning again! Any other information please let me know.

What can I do next?

You need ventilation down there. Use a fan to dry it out and/or put in an exhaust fan. You can also get a dehumidifier that should help a lot.

I'm no expert on basements (ours is finished), but I do know what, um, fragrance you're talking about. What do you think of calling a real expert to come in and see if there's anything really wrong - mold or something like that? It might be a good idea.

I have occasional musty smells in closets, which I seem to be able to dispel by throwing the door open for a while - as long as it takes - to let in light and air.

Our basement is partially finished, but I also have a basement smell issue. Even though it didn't feel damp down there, setting out a cup of Damp Rid proved me wrong within a day. We will purchase a dehumidifier soon.
